I've started collecting rain water off my metal roof into a plastic trash barrel I purchased. I've noticed orangish deposits in the barrel floating in the water and stuck to the inside of the barrel. Im assuming it's rust? Maybe not? What would happen if I watered my plants with this water?

Could be anything But probably not rust unless the roof is metal. IDK where you are but could be from the Saharan dust plume. Really bad this year in places.
The roof is metal and I'm in Northeastern Oklahoma.

Then maybe if it’s rusty up there. But I still think it’s the Saharan air layer. There is a lot of iron in that too.

Could always send it in for a water test if you really wanted to know for sure. Some rust may be beneficial but if you get an over abundance could maybe contribute to lockout/issues if its an antagonist (Fe).
