Russian bounties to kill Americans in Afghanistan

The NYT was the first with the story. They wrote: “The intelligence finding was briefed to Trump, and the White House’s National Security Council discussed the problem at an interagency meeting in late March.” White House officials apparently drew up several possible options to retaliate against the Kremlin, ranging from a diplomatic reprimand right through to fresh sanctions. However, the White House has so far not taken any action.

From the NYT's story.

The United States concluded months ago that the Russian unit, which has been linked to assassination attempts and other covert operations in Europe intended to destabilize the West or take revenge on turncoats, had covertly offered rewards for successful attacks last year.
Islamist militants, or armed criminal elements closely associated with them, are believed to have collected some bounty money, the officials said. Twenty Americans were killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2019, but it was not clear which killings were under suspicion.
The intelligence finding was briefed to President Trump, and the White House’s National Security Council discussed the problem at an interagency meeting in late March, the officials said. Officials developed a menu of potential options — starting with making a diplomatic complaint to Moscow and a demand that it stop, along with an escalating series of sanctions and other possible responses, but the White House has yet to authorize any step, the officials said.

Gee, I wonder if any allies were murdered over this, maybe Canadians have a price on their heads too, along with other NATO allies backing up America there. All the generals and admirals know about this, as does the republican leadership, why not, they are already killing Americans by the thousands in their home states for fear of a mean tweet. What's a few soldiers?

I suppose there is still time for Russia to stop iys psych ops and apologize for their earlier actions in order to avoid the sanctions President Biden will impose.

Then a again most Trumpers have a favorable view of Putin and Russia, most won't see anything wrong at all.

Biden accuses Trump of ‘betrayal’ for ignoring intel that Russia put bounty on heads of American soldiers

Joe Biden trashed President Trump on Saturday for failing to respond to intelligence reports that Russia put a bounty on the heads of American troops in Afghanistan.

The presumptive Democratic nominee called it a “betrayal” of Trump’s duty as commander-in-chief that he did nothing after receiving intelligence reports that Russia paid Taliban radicals to kill GIs.

“This is beyond the pale. It’s a betrayal of the most sacred duty we bear as a nation–protect & equip our troops when we go into harm’s way,” Biden said.

The tRUmp family needs to be lined up against a wall and shot for treason.
The republicans have left you defenseless against Russian election interference, they are their allies and they depend on them to get re elected. They took Russian money in the last election and obstructed justice and were accessories after the fact, and there was no doubt about the facts. They will support Trump over this, no one is denying it, the base won't care or will say it's "fake" news, so will Fox. Trump is not alone in treason, he has the support of over a third of the country.

Over a third of the electorate, only about 18% of the population.

I figure he will end up at his floor, 38% of the vote, your right, the electorate is changing all the time as demographics shift. Hold power for a few election cycles and the issue should largely take care of itself. In the meantime policy changes are required and Fox news removed from the air and online for breach of existing regulations and law, that endangered the lives of citizens for corrupt purposes. Changes in law enforcement and election law, management and security, regulations for social media companies and a host of other things that smart people are working on right now.

Joe knows he will have to hit the ground running, look for a lot of Obama and other experienced people to quickly fill out the staffing, plans and programs are already being formulated and on Jan 21st they will be ready to go. Any sensible person who cared about the job would do this, if he were in Joe's position, Joe knows that providing good stable government through a crisis is the best politics there is. This is Joe's challenge, but also his opportunity for greatness, a chance to lead and really make a difference. It looks like he might have enough of the senate to do it too, after the shit kicking the GOP is gonna get, many will be thinking about 2024 and survival, the democrats might only need a few to hit 66.

Also all those bills that are on Mitch's desk will be amended and passed again in short order, Joe will have a sore hand, there are hundreds of them, starting with H.R.1, which most likely will be even stronger.
