Can I make rso with water?

Hey like the title says, can I make rso with just water?

My plan would be to simmer my trim in a pot of distilled water to melt the resin. Then strain the liquid into a slow cooker to evaporate the water.

I've made rso before with iso but I've a lot more trim this run and tryna keep costs down

Definitely not, unfortunately, you need alcohol or a non polar solvent. None of the active compounds you re after from RSO will dissolve with water.

Cheers, I reckon I'll use ISO again so. Was just hoping for a cheaper alternative lol

My answer is “possibly” but you’d need to run at very high (“ultra-supercritical”) temps and pressures simply to test the hypothesis.

Lower temperatures and pressures will lead to a gummy mess that can only be rescued with a hydrocarbon extraction.

I use boiling water as a medium to extract THC out of my shake and into an edible oil like olive oil. THC isn't water soluble so it can't be absorbed into it. The water keeps the mix from boiling over 100C (212F) and having the THC vaporize off.
It's not really like RSO oil though, more like olive oil. Runnier than RSO.

I’m going to give this a shot. I’ve got lbs of trim to process and I don’t want to buy gallons of everclear. I feel like if bubble hash can be made with water why not use water for this as well.

Just make broad spectrum bubble hash and decarb . It’s not oil but it does the same thing, and you could drink the water if you really wanted to. And no nastys from isopropyl, god I hate that stuff, food grade ethanol of the highest purity is the best solvent for making an oil extraction imho. You could also make rosin. If you’re dead set on having the consistency of rso though then I would use the food grade ethanol

This comes a bit late for the original author. I've spent the past 2 years perfecting a new approach for creating cleaner RSO at home. Water does play a big role later, but not during extraction.

To answer your question, No, you can't use water as a solvent for cannabinoids. Water only dissolves water soluble material which works fine for harvesting trichomes for making ROSIN cakes. But it doesn't actually strip the oils from the plant or trichomes, only a non-polar solvent would do that. Ethanol and Isopropyl are the best sovlents for the job if you don't have a lab and chemistry background. Turns out, Isopropyl has better chemical qualities for extraction than Ethanol. Isopropyl is around 25% less polar than Ethanol resulting in less contact time needed with the plant material. Downside is, both Ethanol and Isopropyl do have a polar aspect and will extract some unwanted plant material. Both are known as "untargeted solvents" meaning they dissolve what comes in contact. Oils, fats and waxes dissolve first, then come more polar items like cellulose, proteins, and phospholipids. The longer the soak, the more trash enters the solution. Oh, and this is independent of temperature, meaning Isopropyl is just as efficient at -50c as it is at 0c. Warmer temperatures allow more unwanted plant material to be dissolved so best to perform a quick cold wash to avoid impurities. But even the fastest cold wash does dissolve some unwanted materials. This is then cleaned up with Silting, Winterization and distillation using salt water, IE, Brine.

Here's a .pdf I wrote explaining the process. It is a bit technical since this is such a radically new approach. Take a look and ask any questions.

Does the oil stick to the bottom of the distiller if no salt is added? Whilst the alcohol is purging?

The hot water is going to dissolve a lot of plant material into the fats, waxes and oils you manage to melt off. It will be a mess. Google 'RSO RxCE', look for Cannabis Home Sciences RxCE Home Page. This process uses water but is still a solvent extraction. The solvent is used to dissolve the lipids, and then is boiled off in some water. This removes any water polar and some semi-polar solubles giving a cleaner resin for winterization.
