FIRST 315 LEC RUN - 2x4x5 TENT

Hey Guys

So this would be my second run ever. My first was with about 120W of CFL in a CocoCoir Medium with FoxFarm Bottle nutes. I did some LST and it turned out pretty decent but the flowers where not as potent as i would have wanted them to be.

This run I am using a Visosun 2x4x5 tent with an AC infinity Cloudline S6 Fan. I havent set up the ventilation yet as I'm still waiting for the fan to arrive and wanted some suggestions on that. I currently have a Viparspectra 300W LED with a couple support LEDS. However I will be returning this lamp and getting a Sunsystems 315 CMH(LEC) with a vertical reflector and a prism ballast. I know the heat levels will be higher than the LEDS but I hope my 6 inch adjustable speed fan can control my temps in the 2x4x5 tent. I understand that CHM lights work best in square shaped tents but i cannot fit that in my space. I have a few fans inside the tent moving air my temps have been at an average of 80F and humidity at about 50%.

The current plants are two unknown strains of bagseed. But I will also have some Karma Genetics Cookie Crash germinating soon. I dont know how the time gap is going to affect these older seedlings if I decide to keep them.

The medium i will be using is fully organic I have 2 seperate batches of soil currently cooking.
1st batch is with
1.5 CU of FFOF
10Qt of Chunky Perlite
4 1/2 LBs of ECW
1 1/4 Cups Espoma Dolomite Lime
1 1/5 Cups of Espoma Plant Tone
1 1/5 Cups of Happy Frog Cavern Culture(bat and seabird guano, rock phosphate and Mychorrihizae)
1/4 Cup of Glacial Rock Dust
1.5 Cups of Alfalfa Meal
1.5 Cups of Blood Meal
1.5 Cups of Fish Bone Meal

The 2nd batch is the same mix but with a base of Kellogs Patio Garden Soil.
I was also going to add Kelp Meal and Neem Meal to the mix but wanted some feedback on what you guys think. I know its allready allot of stuff.
I plan on letting it cook for at least 4 weeks.

I plan on just feeding compost tea's every or every other watering.
My last question is in regards to Mulch and other plants in the garden.

I was growing some Dwarf Pea Sprouts, Cat Grass, Clover Sprouts to use as mulch.
I also have some basil and mint inside the tent. Is it not recommended to have other plants in the same grow space? I would imagine they would take up some of the available CO2.

This is a learning experience and any feedback and advise would be greatly appreciated

The main LED is about 18 inches away. the smaller one below is probabily only about 13 inches away. They seem to be doing okay at this level

It's good that you went with the 6" 402 CFM exhaust fan. Use a 6" opening for your intake vent as well. When I had the Viparspectra blurples, which threw more heat than I was lead to believe, I had a 4" 190 CFM fan which had to run pretty well flat out to remove the heat from my 2 x 4 x 5. And there were times when just a little more oomph would have been nice on those warmer days.

A fan that can move twice the air shouldn't have too much problem keeping your heat under wraps.

Just thinking to myself for a bit ... not certain if height might become an issue. I am gonna read a bit more on LEC lighting to be certain.

Thanks for your input. I have some 8 feet of 6 inch ducting that i'm hoping will be enough.

Also I plan on doing either SCROG or LST to achieve an even canopy and avoid any height issues. I am still undecided on topping or not wanted some feedback on that. I have never topped before and had pretty good results with LST. I had a main COLA on all my plants and allot of other decent sized ones around it. I feel that with topping you will get rid of that main cola but honestly i really dont know. I just dont want to cause any unecessary stress to the plant.

As others here on RIU will attest, you had me at SCROG:

( I love the colour of the girls under the RSpec. Nice to not have to look at that pinkish-purple tint anymore. )

That was one of the things that I wanted to check- what kind of space you need for the LEC unit. But if you SCROG and keep the canopy pretty flat before you flip, canopy - light distance after stretch shouldn't be that big of an issue.

Are you growing in soil or what medium?
I really want to do SCROG but still coming up with a way to water and removed drip trays without disturbing the scrog net

A 2:1 soil & Pro-Mix blend. That might change to straight coco once the Pro-Mix is spent.

I use a 1 gallon pump sprayer with the wand removed to water the girls. Then a turkey baster sucks up the run-off from the drain tray. Rarely do I suck up more than 1 cup when giving them 1 imperial gallon.

The ladies are spread through the net while they are still in VEG then they go in FLOWER with the net attached. Once they go into the flower tent, they are not touched again until chop.

Nice so you are gonna do almost like a dry hydro?

Here are some updates on what I did. I just wont be able to remove the trays from underneath so I will have to rely on a turkey baster or vaccume.

word I’m gona check it out. Yeah I settled on the vertical reflector since I hear it puts out a more penetrating light . Although the other one created a footprint that might have worked better for my space. But..

I did notice that the horizontal one seems to have the ballast attached to the reflector. While the vertical one has it separate.

Great article - and it answered my concern about LEC/canopy distance. But they also noticed more stretch with the LEC. If you keep your SCROG net at 20" above the tent floor, height shouldn't be any issue for you.

The grower made a quick mention about their regret for not lollipopping. I skipped that part during my last grow as well and wished I hadn't. Too much LARF that ended up in the compost. As they said "Lesson learned for my next side-by-side… Never skip plant training day!"

I would have been interested to see what the final yield would have been if they did trim underneath.

If this indoor grow goes smoothly, Im probably gonna pull the trigger on a LEC rig myself. i saw another guys grow journal and he trained his plants accordingly and the differences was staggering. It sold me, the guy growing was against LEC and set it up to prove that they were not great, but he admitted to being blown away with the results
