Advantages, or disadvantages

Lets say I have an 8 by 10 room. I also have 1 400w HPS and 1 400w MH ballast bulbs and reflectors. My plan is to eventually have a bi monthly harvest using a mother and clones, But for now I want to start my first grow, using both 400w lights at the same time, rotating so the plants get equal coverage from both. Will this work? What are the advantages or disadvantages?

I kind of figured during vegg the HPS light would be useless and during flowering the MH light would be useless, Is this a waste of energy.

If provided, herb will use the specturm of light it is needing at that moment. Leave em both on and observe how well your plants will grow. Hang them up so thier light distribution is overlapping, you wont be disappointed. Luck wit the grow

I say forget the 2 400's and get a 1000 watter...bigger,heavier buds...much higher yield...just my opinion. Good Luck...

depending on the amount of plants you have it might be easier to move lights rather than moving plants. just put them on hooks so you can swap positions every 6 hours? seems like alot of work to me. i would prolly just mount them side by side so you basically have an 800w light. gl

I'd get a 3 x 6 flood tray and rotate from MH down to HPS at the other end over the course of 2 months or whatever. You'd need another 100w for mother plants but it's a very decent start.

That is incorrect. It is perfectly possible to veg with a HPS, and you can flower with a MH. It is just that they do not provide the ideal spectrum, respectively, for each phase. MH have a higher wavelength, closer to the blue spectrum, which is want plants do best with in the vegetative growth phase. HPS have a lower wavelength, and are closer to the red end of the spectrum, which is optimal for budding. However, it is possilble to grow all the way to harvest using just a MH or HPS.

If you have two of them and insist on using both simultaneously, you will need a light mover, possibly two. However, if I were you, I would use the MH exlusively for mothers and vegetative growth, and get a 600w HPS to compliment your 400w unit. That way, you have 1000 watts of HPS for you flowering girls. This will give you better coverage and penetration, resulting in better yields.

Bi monthly, you do mean every 2 months?

the room size is about 3 times too big for the lights.

Pop 9 plants under the 400W HPS in a single cola config (SoG-like) 1m x 1m

And keep the 400W MH (overkill) for veggin (36 plants) 1mx 1m

Bi monthly=Twice a month, and there will be about a 2' walkway all the way around the grow area. The budget for equipment is $0 so no adding "NEW" equipment. All of the above Ideas are great, but the guy is not wanting to go so BIG on his first try. Hes feeling out the room, and wants to keep it to 1 room. Start out with 19 plants hoping for 9-10 Fems under the 800w of combined light.. Grow em a foot @18-6 then flip entire room to 12/12 untill All Fems are complete.

Thanks for the great responses.

That would be semi-monthly (semi being 1/2, bi being 2. sorry I get that way at times.(yeah, being a dick:) ))

So, here's what I would do.

Pop *both* 400W MH & HPS on a light mover (rotating, basically both for flowering) and clone/veg under a few shop lights and go for a SoG.
You got the room and the lights for reasonable production.

Well the dictionary has it as BOTH ways. Twice a month or every other month. Definition 1 and definition 2 You are however correct about semimonthly which IS twice a month. Typically publishing companies use it as every other month, most others use it as twice a month.
