White top... Anyone seen this before?

Yo @Nizza thanks bud. I also don't mind being wrong it's all good boys.
Let's just say it's a bleached tip.
Here's the updated pics as promised.
I've pulled the main cola, rest will follow over next week or so...
lets see a smoke report of that white bud. What I'm reading about this is that the white part of the bud has tested higher and THC and has a very terpy flavor in that article..
If this is a bleached bud, wouldn't everyone here agree it would taste like shit and not get you high?
I am not seeing any light stress on this plant, it is more like what is described on that article with a certain mix of spectrum

Or a variegated bud! :blsmoke:
right here. I had a variegated bud a while back and did a little research into albinism in cannabis. I wonder if this is actual bleaching or albanism brought out of late flower. Albinism is known for lack of yields , but some of the albino bud is tested and is very high in THC %

This would be nice to see if it is bleaching or something brought out of genetics throguh the lights

It would make sense new lighting can bring out certain traits of buds..

If this is bleaching, it is bleaching... but I would expect some light stress. I don't see any here

I just harvested after 11weeks 12/12, and several main colas have almost light tan/white color on the interior of the buds. They are solid and dank AF, looks similar to this light-colored calyx cluster...

no chlorophyll, no terps.

Was always under the impression that the cannabinoids(THC) were also shot, but I can't attest to that.

But I will vehemently argue that any white bud, whether genetic, or light bleached.. is extra terpy. It literally can't be. Terpene production relies on chlorophyll. Therefore it stands to reason that a flower void of chlorophyll doesn't have the ability to produce any terps at all. Much less extra ones.

Edit: Plant terpenes, I should say. Because B.O. and other things technically have terpenes.

so how does that explain the article and several others experience?
I just found this what supports light bleeching and explosive growth being a cause.

but then have read this which contradicts it https://www.leafly.com/news/growing/white-tips-on-cannabis-buds

would you be surprised that the "white tips" are actually flavorful and very potent? I would too, but I always am happy to see what is changing

Yeah this plant has grown for 1000000000 years...
"what they thought was burnt... was actually very potent and tasty"

Have you read into this much?

and then this points furthermore into varegiation https://www.thcfarmer.com/threads/wierd-bud-tip.18499/

I know you are thinking it is light burn... but what if it isn't? Is this a good topic to discuss?? Maybe things aren't as transparent as they seem...

Now to backup the "argument" of this being light bleaching. Here are some signs of bleaching https://www.growweedeasy.com/cannabis-plant-problems/light-burn
Do you see alot of these signs with the newer pics?

It doesn't only happen on upper leaves.. the overall plant is effected and it seems pretty clear when the plant is getting too many photons

what do yall think? For me it is just a smoke test... Is it tasty and gets U fucked up. Then it is not a bad thing and may want to record strain/keep strain and share what lighting and heights you've used~ as well as medium and feeding..
This will help everyone else decide how this happened and if it is good or not. If able to replicate this, you could determine what caused it.

Overall though, generally, this isn't a desired trait. Albinism/ variegation hurts yields even if % is higher as far as I've read. The benefits do not outweigh the negatives. Great topic yall

Light bleaching and burn are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. Light BURN... CAN cause bleached tips... But that's at very high heat and you see curled and burnt leaves.

However, if you look into LED BLEACHING... you'll see that it has to do with spectrum.

I don't doubt for a second that HID burned plants can be tasty. they're getting the good stuff.

However LED sucks.

You may want to look into the difference. Everything you guys keep parrying with is about burn. I said Bleaching. Burning does bring bleaching. However bleaching doesn't bring burning because most LED's run at lower temps.

It has to do with intensity of spectrum!

I like your input here. I am seeing what you are saying, but these articles clearly state this “phenomenon” is under leds and the tested bud is terpy and strong after lab testing

Wouldn’t you agree if the bud was bleached or burned it would have shitty taste? I have no experience seeing this at all besides online now.
Stepping away from variegation and albinism:
Is this borderline good/bad to happen when regarding light intensity? The rest of the plant looks like it did well. I would want to see all the info I can on this because I run leds as well but haven’t seen this happen yet

"Light Bleaching- If you use LED’s you may not stress your plants from heat, but hanging your LED’s too close to your plants will bleach your leaves. If you let it go on longer, it’ll eventually start bleaching fruits and flowers, which will result in an underwhelming yield.

Heat Stress & Bleaching- HID grow lights pose a threat on both ends. Not only will hanging them too close to your plants bleach them, but the environment around the plant will start to overheat the plant. This will cause the plant to dry out and curl, which means they are thirsty (NOTE: in nature, leaves curl and turn up to collect moisture and let it flow down toward the plant’s roots) In cases of bleaching, you simply want to move your lights further away from the plant. They may not ever get back that color you love, but you can prevent it from ruining your crop. In terms of heat stress not only do you want to consider moving and adjusting your lights, but you’ll want to regulate the temperature in your grow room. That means installing a new source of cool air, airflow, and making sure your medium is at a good temperature (some growers forget that roots also need a cool temperature to help against overheating)"

You may very well be right, and I may have the damage backwards. The LED flower may still be terpy, but the HID burn is definitely going to destroy trichs and terps. It's just physics. With 100+ degrees blasting it, some decarboxylation is occurring as well as a very rapid drying of plant material.

Pics? This is a pretty interesting subject
Not the best picture to show what I'm seeing, as i don't want to riffle through the buds too much at the moment, but while trimming, there where several buds that have literally no chlorophyll left in the interior calyxs (i don't flush, but dial back N to zero last two weeks). These have a Durban poison mother, and are by far the "terpiest" buds I've ever smelled. Perhaps all the chlorophyll has been consumed to create all those terps?

I really didn't expect such great discussion. This is the first time I've come across it (the white tip not great discussion on rollitup lol) . Certainly won't argue anymore that is looks like light bleaching. Also great info coming out to counter that theory.
I've picked the white top off and I'm cleaning my pipe to hit that shit in one, should dry pretty quick

And from the set up I'm running that is very plausible

@Blent what quantum boards are you running. I use Samsung strips but I also have a “blue” channel of diodes that runs 390 - 485 nm. UVA up through Blue. It powers at 12 watts per square foot. I had a CBD strain do the same thing Last year. https://www.rollitup.org/t/white-bud-tips.988024/. I pretty sure it was a result of the heavy blue light.
how did those chunks taste in comparison?

Nice pics btw. I have always been fascinated by the legendary white bud. Bud I learned that it tasted empty and harsh and was always discouraged. Now after today's conversation, I believe that it's only when HID actually burns the plant to where it bleaches that this damage occurs. But you seem to have first hand experience with a lofty amount to test..

Yeah I'm an asshole man. Don't ever be afraid to be one back and don't be afraid to engage in discussion with me after any disagreements. I'm here for the sake of the knowledge and ridiculously valuable FREE education. I too gained a lot from this discussion. Hoping the wizard can teach us a little more lol
