How close is too close.

When using regular household lamp led with dome removed, what is a good distance for vegging a 1st day seedling? The bulbs are 16 watt 5600k. 100watt equivalent. Pretty dang bright.

That will probably work ok for veg but once you get to flower you should try to increase the amount of light if you can, or at least swap the bulbs for a warmer colour spectrum, below 5000K, ideally around 3600-4000k.

I've been using this setup for breeding chamber. I haven't started from seed in here for 2 years. Wasn't sure about height for a seedling. Usually just stick a well rooted 2 week plant into the LECA... When flowering I add 3 more bulbs ar 3000k 100 watt equivalent. Makes for dense seeded buds. But now I'm going for a 5 week veg with some training to try a C.S. experiment.

Got ya, not a bad plan at all imo. Bet you could add the veg lights quicker than one a week even, add the 2nd as soon as its established in a couple days and then add the other two in a week. Nice little closet grow you got there. Do you have any fans or venting to move air in there?

if the light provides low levels of the blue spectrum, no matter how much you lower it the seedlings will always stretch as f*ckers

i'm experimenting this right now, the driver of my veg light broke down, and i had to go with a cheap led i used 4 years ago for the last time. It broke too after 3 days. Now they are under the last light left in the closet, gifted to me by a friend that stopped growing couple years ago..
A 150 watt i think hps or agro CFL dunno, anyways a ton of heat and yellow/reddish spectrum. i'd like to post a picture of these fuckers, 12 inch from the light they are looking super skinny and weak.
hopefully mars hydro will send me a new driver in a couple days, very nice company

This is not how you want to start a seedling in dwc.
Also, that huge gap of hydroton at the top of your netpot is letting all kinds of light into your bucket which will lead to algae and rot.

Ill fill the net pot up once the plant stops the initial stretch to the cotyledons. I totally agree with the light concern. Ive found that the media stays moist when starting a seed as filling the net cup to the top allows for faster evaporation. It also takes away from top feeding water until the root hits the juice.. Been my experience....ah heck i like a challenge.. ill go stack some rocks around the edges....tbc.

Yeah a lot of us around here wait until the roots reach the water before putting it in the netpot. Makes this transition a lot easier and imo quite a bit faster. You're doing things the hard way still, there's other ways that are faster and require way less attention.

Come see us a bit in the dwc/rdwc section.

Just lowered water level 1 inch. Turned all lights on. Plant is growing. Btw . 10 hrs in paper towel, it popped. 4 days my way..WELP .! THERE IT IS...No need for messing around with moving from seed to starter cube to RDWC..
