But doesn't keeping it moist encourage root fungus or something? N I've also read that roots grow best in dry dirt bc they spread out searching for water...It depends on what's in the tap water. If you're water is decent and not super hard and full of minerals, its totally fine. I use my well water that's slightly hard that has a pH of 7.2-7.5 depending on the time of year. The main mineral in mine is Ca, so I don't need to add any extra. But I do add Mg sometimes via epsom salt.
The microbes in organic soil will buffer the pH to some degree, but when you let the soil dry out completely, you are killing a lot of them. I try to keep my living soil moist, but not wet.
