I think I have a handle on this, a lot more than I did before you guys helped out. So..I don't have an amazing scale for using pool shock so, can I use bleach or peroxide (as Lpena007 suggested)? Or should I shell out for the scale? If bleach is okay (or peroxide) how much and how frequently?

Okay...while I'm waiting on the PH meter from Amazon, I checked using the drops. The tap water was showing a PH of 7 and the water, in the bucket, was showing 4.5. Not sure what is causing it to get so acidic, but I have to wonder if it has anything to do with the algae/bacteria that killed the plant.

You're seeing low pH from the root rot. Best action at this point would be to wash the roots and bucket with peroxide/pool shock(whichever you choose to use for a sterile system) and reset. Like I said before, it was always a crap shoot even running bennies when the rez hovered around 80degF. Hydro really either needs a chiller or a sterile system.

I personally would never put bleach in my res. I dont even clean with it.
Pool shock is the most cost effective way to do it. You need very very small amounts.
Peroxide would be my favored method of sterile res, but you want to use a little bit of a highly concentrated h2o2. 30%+. Its not stable at lower concentration so the store bought 3% stuff has stabilizers in it.

Fair enough. I'm not sure where one buys 30% peroxide from. I'll see if I can dig it up. If not, i will grab a scale and go the "Pool shock" route.

the cheap 3% stuff all has stabilizers in it and they are not required to disclose what they are.
Its great for cleaning, but i wouldnt dump it in my plants.
Yes it costs more, but its safer for the plants and you use 10x less at a time.

it's harder to find b/c of its' explosive nature. but beauty supply stores have 20 something % w/o additives. tell them you want to go blond.

A lot of grow shops carry it. Nursery/gardening supply shops.
Plenty of places that will ship it, but it's usually just as much to ship it as the cost of a gallon.

Hey guys, can I please chime in with a couple of questions regarding Hydrogen peroxide dosing rates?
I'm currently also working through (hopefully at the tail end now) of some issues experienced that have made me aware of the need to regularly add some sort of sanitation agent to some hydro systems. And all things considered I'm leaning towards Hydrogen peroxide as being my best bet.
But what I am noticing is that when I convert the various dosing rates being recommended on these forums (and others) back to PPM there is a massive ppm range effectively being recommended (8ppm to over 1000ppm).
Common sense is suggesting to me that the correct range can't be this wide and that this may be why some are saying HP doesn't work, while others are saying it does, and yet others are saying it fried their plants.
So the questions I have for everybody are:
Where did you get your recommended dosing rates for Hydrogen peroxide from?
Has anyone actually either found a HP dosing rate recommended via a reliable reputable commercial horticultural source, or proved via very careful trial and error what are the effective ranges for dosing with Hydrogen peroxide?

If you pour straight 50% H2O2 on top of your pump when you are flooding a table the plants will all immediately wilt. Always dose your tank when the pump is off so it dilutes and your roots are not getting hit with straight H2O2. When you see and feel what it does to your skin you will see what I mean lol
