RSO Help?

I am wanting to make some RSO instead of my standard butter that I normally make with my trim. I have read around and it seems that the best option is to use IsoP due to it being 99% pure instead of the standard everclear (ethanol) which is roughly 95% pure. The extraction seems rather simple, just grind up your weed to give the most surface area, then soak the bud in your solvent for a few hours, decant off the solvent and then concentrate down until all remaining alcohol is gone. Making sure to do this in a well-ventilated area with no open flame to ignite the alcohol vapor. Does anyone have a recipe or a recommendation for making this stuff, it will be my first time and id prefer to not poison myself.

It is a very simple process, however safety is your main concern. To speed the process up, take a hot plate (set on low) and set the dish filled with the liquid on top (no open flame). From my experience you don't need to keep your material in the ethanol for hours, just a 10-20min wash. I make a lot of creams/tropicals, however I have heard that some people have experienced irritation/itching (just in case you plan to make creams ect...) from the chlorophyll (could be an effect from having long washes, combined with sensitive skin). After the ethanol has evaporated scrape a small amount off the dish and take a flame to the oil (make sure to be in a different room), if it bursts into flames then you have not removed all the ethanol and need to let the residing ethanol evaporate.
Hope this helps:bigjoint:

It cost more, but I believe that Everclear is the better option, toxicity & all that stuff.
You could also get a cheap ass still from ebay and reclaim your alcohol.
Also, everything should be as cold as possible when you do the wash.

Have fun

Here is a video of Rick Simpson making his RSO:

The yield is higher grinding the material, but so is the pickup of the non targeted elements from inside the plant cells, adding to the bulk. The goodies that we covet are on the outside of the leaf cells, so no need to rupture leaf cells by grinding.

The key is to have adequate agitation to eliminate dead spots and keep the boundary layers removed as they form.

When the solvent and trichomes first come into contact, 100% solvent is 100% agressive, but as it dissolves the trichome, the solvent in contact with the trichome becomes more and more diluted, so the dissolution process slows down in that boundary layer interface to a crawl or halt.

Rick used Varnish and Paint grade Naphtha, which is non polar, so less prone to pick up polar elements like chlorophyll using his stir with a pharmaceutical grade 2X2 Pine stick at ambient, and recover in a rice cooker technique.

Using polar ISO and soaking at ambient temperatures will extract a boat load of chlorophyll, which makes a harsh dab that tastes like shit, and some folks get severe gastric disturbances from concentrated chlorophyll, besides it tasting like greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen shit, so suggest considering the QWISO process instead.

If you are going to eat this, consider using 95% Ethanol instead, and the QWET process. When it reaches that azeotropic stage of evaporation, you can stick the shallow evaporating dish in the freezer to harden the oil clumped together because it is hydrophobic, and pour off/blot most of the water before it freezes. 200 proof reagent grades are available if you are concerned about dealing with 5% water.

Both QWISO and QWET rely on extracting at low enough temperatures that the C-30 through C-55 molecules above our targeted C-10 through C-22, become less soluble, so less of them are extracted.

Here in Michigan we have a really hard time getting everclear, and it’s crazy expensive to have it shipped, all we have that are readily available to us are Isopropyl and 151 everclear

Can't get everclear here either, I was using 99% ISO, I found the whole process labour intensive and time consuming when doing larger batches.
I've switched to coconut oil extraction now.

I make the coconut oil but I like the rso because of the fact I can eat it, dab it, and sometimes even put a little glob on my bowl to slow the burn down, I use it more as a luxury item because it’s expensive around here so I figured I could make some with my left over sugar leaf from last years harvest

Not rso related but with my coconut oil I like to cook it extra long, I actually enjoy the weed taste in my oil, plus That way nobody accidentally eats an edible around my house without realizing what it is... happened to my poor grandma
