No smell

I have grown 8 different strains now. Other than a mild aroma, NONE of them had a potent smell.

I grow in a 4x4 tent, in soil(3 gal fabric pots), under a 600w grow light along with supplemental 2ft flourescents on the sides of the tent. Temp is usually in mid to upper 70's at top of canopy.

I use the FF trio, FF solubles, FF Kelp me kelp you, and FF Mackerel. Am about to start using FF Bembe as well.

My plants look healthy but do not produce potent buds or aroma.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Do they smell while they are growing and then lose it when they are harvested, or just don't smell at all?

Its possible you have had pour genetics which don't produce much smell.

Its also possible you are chopping your plants to early if they aren't retaining the smell after harvest. Chopping early will so produce less then potent buds with a short lasting high.

I've got a plant flowering that doesnt really reek and I've grown flowers before that didn't stink. Often times at the dispensary I'll smell a strain that doesn't smell strong. I know those are just a bunch of anecdotes but I still get high off of pot that isn't skunk.

Sounds like either genetics (if no smell while growing) or an issue with your drying/curing methods (if smell is initially present but gone after buds are ready to smoke). You're not running an ozone generator or ionizer, are you?

You haven't mentioned what week of flower? 8 different strains with the same problem sounds like something is wrong on your end

From my limited experience that breaks it down into three different outcomes.

First, we have to take a look at the genetics, and grow environment to ensure the strain has everything needed to properly develop for potency.

Next, you have to take into consideration your curing methods. It doesn't matter how well you grow the flower, but if you mess up on the drying and curing then it's game over for any kind of taste or aroma.

Besides from that -- I've noticed that you can smell your own grow less than what other people do. For example, when flowering I hardly smell my strains anymore since I'm use to them, however once I bag up some flower and leave my house to a buddies the smell is overwhelming. It's just the different environment, and the way my body allows me to notice it mixed with the other scents and aromas in the air.

What, exactly, is your 600w grow light? Also curious to learn if you or others use air fresheners in the house, say an Ona gel?

Will try and answer all in one post....

When I say no smell, I mean all the way through the growth cycle to harvest. Even after curing there isnt much improvement.
Some of the strains I've grown are:
TriFi
White Widow
Grape Nanas
Super Glue
Gelato
Tangerine Dream
Critical Purple
And have Wedding Cake in veg

My grow light system is the 600w iPower HPS for flowering. Veg is under a 4ft-8 bulb array of T5's.

When I go on business trips and come home after a week, I hope to get greeted by the smell of buds but only smell a mild scent as if you walked into someones vegetable garden.

Yesterday I took some of my yield to a party. I could get little wisps of some nice aroma when I had my bag nearby. Then someone broke out their small container of Gorilla Glue.
The aroma from the GG was amazing.
I have aroma envy.

I dont know what else I can do that would make a difference. Everyone that has tried my weed has said it was "just ok"...except for the TriFi which they said is "pretty good but not great".

Oh....and my water/nute schedule:
Sunday: water and nutes
Tuesday: water
Thursday: water
Here is my 2c.
Experience will improve your quality.
There is another thread like this with a grower chatting about not getting quality in coco.
Genetics will play a roll but it is a small roll IMO and others agree with that. Some feel genetics is everything.

I can see from the short amount of information that the way you water on specific days will decrease quality compared to a plant that is watered without a schedule by someone who has experience watering.

2nd opinion. Growers who reach that level of skill (understanding watering) with FFOF an HF would not be using all of the ferts you listed and would not fertilize on a schedule.

Learning these thing with experience will play a major roll on increasing quality.

If you want top shelf quality in a soil grow then learn the difference between ferts that feed the soil and ferts that feed the roots.
Good Luck!

Its not genetics as a non smelly plant is the holy grail and still not possible.

Your grow is off im afraid but too many variables to suggest why.

Eventually you will work it out :-)

Actually kingrow, my last batch of seeds I popped I got a plant that literally had no smell. It was growing with 3-4 other strains and/or phenotypes which all had their own appropriate smells like usual. It was one specific plant, and I even ran clones of that plant to see what happened..... still no smell, and really no flavor. It did smoke ok, but no where near as well as it’s sister plant or the others in my room at the same time.

Ya smoke not great so you messed up a little.

Its like with hermies - produce me one herm free clone and i will make you very very very rich indeed. How fast and much initially do you think this sort of genetics is going to make market wide? Noobs from everywhere will be handing over top dollar to.my tiny clone bank until the day it becomes widely available - even then many will prefer me over others.

I dont doubt weid stuff happens, grow enough and youll see it all but not for genetics but because something wasnt quite right. Numero uno reason we get busted for years now is the darn smell, wether growing or smoking. Ffs if there were any strain or cut that didnt genetically smell then since its first discovery we would all be growing it and nothing else. Rhino carbon filters and ona gel would never have existed and i wouldnt have been busted by my parents the other day smoking on that last bong i had.

Again with mutations, ploidy (triploidy and such) and whorlled phylotaxy - many have claimed or tried but all ended in fail. This site makes certain facts very apparent, gazillions of threads but zero marketable end product.

The genetics of weed and its long term survival strategy make it unchanged and very hard to change, hence why breedable mutations are very very very to the power of ten hard to find. Oh yes we see plentiful diversity but never a plant that dosent smell or dosent carry the ability to herm and such :-)

Well you can believe whatever you want, it definitely was genetics. I’ve grown well over a thousand plants and have never had this happen before. I also had multiple other plants from the same seeds and other strains growing at the same time which all smelled wonderful like usual from start of flower till they got smoked.

Also non smelling weed would not be the best seller In the world. The smell and flavor of the plants is a part of what makes it enjoyable. The terpenes absolutely effect the high.

I've learned the only way to improve smell, aroma and flavor is to let plants grow to 50% amber hairs or some amber trichomes and then chop them down, hang them upside down branch by branch removing ONLY fan leaves and then hand dry trim prior to jarring. Your hang dry time will vary, just make sure you have circulation in the room you're drying with cool temps and moderate humidity (50-55% RH).

Personally I dry trim when I'm able to flake leaves off by handling buds or snap stems without them breaking.

Put the buds directly into a jar once you're done dry trimming and open the jars once per/day for 15-20 minutes and then close. After about a week you should notice the smell is locked in pretty good. Add a Boveda pack 55-62% depending on your preference (I'd try both to see what you prefer, personally I prefer 62% because I roll a lot of joints and vape my cannabis. I don't like fast burning or vaping dry weed. The extra humidity will also allow for more smell to be retained by the buds.

Basically:
  1. hang plants to dry
  2. dry trim plants
  3. place nicely trimmed buds into jar
  4. burp aka open jars for 15-20 mins each day then reseal for 1-2 weeks.
  5. Add Boveda or similar moisture packs into the jars to keep the buds fresh and lock in any aromas and flavors.

Good luck and I'm looking forward to hearing about your results being better. By the way I don't get stinky weed during growth periods and I've grown many of the strains you mention. I use carbon filters for my exhaust but even in the tents unless I rub the weed or something I don't get lots of smell. You're usually only going to get dank smell if you have poor circulation or ventilation and the buds are kinda allowed to "must" up the room.

Just out of curiosity, what breeder(s)/bank(s) did the seeds come from? Were they all from the same place?
I've been getting my seeds all from Growers Choice so I second this question. I noticed far superior buds when I grew a clone of MAC from StateGenetics in Michigan. By superior I mean they had way more resin/trichomes and the smell was BOMB.

I’ve had many strains with no smell but some there that just reeked. It’s probably a combination of genetics, the way you cure/dry and timing of harvest. Could be chopping Roos soon or too late. Also someone else mentioned are you using ona gel, air fresheners, or ozone generator? Don’t tell me you are buying the cheapest seeds from Nirvana?
