Definitely don't put a pH pen in RO or distilled water.
Hmm. I generally run around 2.0 EC but everyones grow is different.im currently backing the EC down to 1.0 from 1.6 to hopefully sort out the lockout issues.
An EC meter is fine in RO.
You could fill your system with 5 gallon buckets to see what the capacity is.

I run GH three part with Armor Si and Calimagic. I am usually at 1000 - 1200 PPM. 1000 PPM = 2.0 EC.
