Root Question

Hi All -

First run of DIY 4 site 13gl rdwc.. in my 4th week veg from seedling.. growing a little concerned about some brown material I am starting to see multiply on my roots. Plants look great; however I have noticed some brown clumps on the roots... If I touch the clumps they pull away easily almost like its caught in the roots not growing on them. Can this happen sometimes or should I be concerned with root rot?

I did just change my filter and there was some gunk in there that got into my res.. is it possible for that to get in your roots but not be actual root rot? I am using strainer in addition to filter on my return to try and clean that out. Is it OK to have a biofilm growing on some things? Smells earthy.. not bad or anything. I have a 4 large airstone system with plenty of bubbles.

GH Flora Nova Grow, cal mag, GH rapidstart, GH Floralicious, Hydroguard, (ppm 830, pH 5.86, water temp 68 (74 ambient), RO water with 20 PPM, 120PPM after cal mag so 690 actual nutrient PPM. The floralicious was just added at last res change (every 7 days) and has made the water SUPER dark and earthy smelling.

Any thoughts are much appreciated... thanks all

Thanks for the suggestion. You think the additives might have given me some issues?
Start out simple with nutes. especially the flora nova line. the bloom is all i used other than root rot preventative. i have run bothe sterile and with good bacteria.

I will take a pic tonight and upload. I checked on the roots this morning and it looks like it's decreased since the night before. I cleaned my filters and added more hydroguard so not sure which one it was that helped... but will show you guys later. Thank you very much for responding and offering to help... moving from soil to DWC is a bit stressful at first!!!

No worries. I think that most of the stress I experienced when I first started hydro was from tales of whoa on the net...

Ok cool mate thanks. I run maxi bloom but wanna give Flora Nova a try and i run a sterile system.
I'll save you some money: keep the Maxi Bloom and buy a bag of BioAg CytoPlus. it's a powdered kelp, humic and fulvic mix and some trace Micros too. it's cheap and works great.

Of course my phone camera has died and I cant figure out to fix it... but I have done a lot of research and what I have looks exactly like many root rot pictures I have seen.

I left for 2 days and when I came back the water on my re circulation line was barely coming out because my filter was clogged with a brown organic matter. When I cleaned everything out some of that organic matter got into my reservoir and thus into my plant's pots.. that is the organic matter I am seeing in the roots. I started adding more hydroguard, turned up the air on my air stones, and turned down the temp in my chiller to 66-68^ (was at 68-70). Things seem to be improving.. but after lots of research I am going to make the Heisenbubbles tea tonight and let it brew for 36 hours and add it as directed. I am going to try the natural route before I go to H202 as there are a lot of downsides to that as well.

I have no light leaks.. and the plants look great, no signs of any stress issues, so it is a little odd but maybe i am getting a head of it. If I can figure out my camera I will post some pics.

I followed Scotty balls Pineapple Express waterfarm grow advice and tried just flora nova bloom. It worked good but I couldn’t shake the stuff enough to liquify it. It was like muck in a bottle. Could that be the problem? There is organic matter in that line of nutrients. I’ve since gone with promix and jacks citrus fertilizer.

I would also think about ditching the filter. That sounds like it will become a breeding ground for nasty stuff.

Really? I thought having a filter would help me keep out any organic matter from building up in my chiller.. but I guess it could be a good place to hide. I am following the Heisenbubbles RDWC build and he has a filter with excellent results... but if this continues I will remove it i guess. Still trying to get my camera working.. looking like new phone will only fix it. Anyone ever get a 'Server error restart camera app" on Android devices? LOL always something.
