Hi all I am trying to get your opinion on lighting to use for my grow space.... its like a 3X3 grow space... What do people prefer? Whats the best lighting?
Some say HID is the best and some say CFL Lights are the best.

get a hid light with a switchable ballast so you can do mh and hps with the change of a bulb. for that grwo space you can go with a 400W or even a 600W for some more power.

get a hid, in the long run they are cheaper than always re-buying a couple dozen cfls
Yes and they also are much better at penetrating dense vegetative growth to help with your yield and for the most part offer a better spectrum of light than regular cfl's.

I'm with everyone else here, go with the hid. Hid's are like souped up muscle cars, cfls, to me, are like those little rice-burners just tryin to keep up

Shit mann if you wanna go in the direction where itz not putting too much $ on the electric bill than id say do both mann. I meen like get a relatively low power HID light say anywhere from 70 to 150W. and then run cfls with that (as many as you need). Then you'll have the right type of light and enough of it as long as you have enough lights. I always say 10,000 lumens per plant, and you'll be good.

This is my setup - Roughly 25,000 lumens

70w hps - 7000 lumens
65W Large cfl - 4000 lumens
cfl floodlight - 1300 lumens
22w cfl - 900 lumens
both dual florescent light fixtures (4 lights) - 10,600 lumens
18 inch florescent light ?watt- 1000 lumens

Everyone thinks this..and rightfully so. I thought lumens were cumuliative like that..til I came on this site. someone correct me if Im wrong, but I dont think lumens add up like that. So you are getting a good dispersal of light...but your lumens are only as high as your brightest bulb.

and for a 3x3 i would highly advice against 600w. 400w your gonna need to do some work to keep that space cool. Cause i have 600w in a closet that is effectively twice (and then some) the size of your space. and i have problems keeping the temperatures down..then again I live where it is still 90 in october. Cooltubes are great, so are digi switchables. quieter (all u hear is the cooling fan on a digi). I think a cooltube would be good, they really do wonders keeping a light cooled with the right fan. Get a 400w digi-switchable and pack every centimeter of your space with plants. btw look into advanced training..or ScrOg..or topping or fimming heavily. cause you'll lose almost a foot with your hood of the height of the ceiling (less u can sink it up in the ceiling which is much easier than it sounds). hope i offered some help. peace.

this is true grasshoppa diffrnt points of light dnt ++++++up i have to find where i read it but will post it when i find it.... oh yea and their is a thread where a guy grew 1 lb with 1 plant scrog with a 400w in a space like yours(3x3) i will post it too

FYI HPS HID lights are almost twice as efficient as Fluoro bulbs are. So for those folks that think by switching to CFL or Fluoro will lower your bill they are wrong. HPS puts out almost twice the light power for the same wattage used. a 400 fluoro uses the exact same amount of power as a 400 watt HPS, except the HPS is putting out twice the amount of light.

well yeah, but either way. The plants are still using some light from each light that you have. I meen they might not be cumulative but they sure do help.

And with florescents your still putting them as close to the plant as you can, right? So if you throw a hps into the mixture, itz still getting light from all the lights instead of one. I meen it might not be 25,000 lumens like i said before. But it still has to be alot of light ya know? if you add up all the light outputs, and then divide by the sq. ft. of your grow room you end up with a rough estimate, of how much useable light your plant is getting, right?
