Hay v. Dank smell

Yea, I’m growing in a really awkward spot in the corner of my yard to keep out of sight of neighbors. Something like that wouldn’t fit between the chicken run and the hedge. Weed’s legal in Oregon but my wife has a sort of prominent job in town so we want to suppress rumors about her weed-smoking drunk of a husband...
Yeah, I get that. Kinda the same situation down here in Cali, except it hasn't been very wet.

I'm gonna do some late season stuff myself, and looking at a mini-greenhouse like this for $50 online to protect from rain:

What do they call those? Seems more elastic and permeable than a tarp. I thought about using a tarp but then figured the water would pool in the middle and potentially squish stuff...

That looks cool — I’m definitely gonna look at stuff like that for next year. I am going to stick with umbrellas for this year, though, just because the plants are so irregular in size and shape. I’ve got an OPN that’s hella tall and thin, a Cinex that’s squat on the ground, a rhino-shaped Chem Burn and a big old beach ball looking Harle Tsu. I’ve been chopping as a hedge against the rain but still have a bunch growing out there. The amount I harvested has barely made a dent really...
Still haven't mastered the whole drying and curing thing.. But last year i had some plants that smelled like hay when i jarred it and after i burped it. But 6 months later some of the best smelling and best smoke i got out of the crop.
Yeah my buddy who harvested a week before me and was really dealing with hay smell now has bud that’s smelling more normal. It’s like half weed half hay smelling now, as opposed to pure hay.

In the end, based on everyone’s comments, I think my conclusion is the dank smell is overwhelmed by the hay smell while the chlorophyll degrades. The smell of the terpenes and other compounds is ultimately more persistent. Harvesting prematurely probably contributes to hay-smelling weed because the terpenes etc. aren’t as developed and the plant still has more biomass dedicated to chlorophyll, i think. Could be wrong, but the comment about hay smell indicating excess moisture is inconsistent with what I’ve harvested, which is drying well. As for smoking premature schwag, I am fine with it as long as it creates airflow for remaining buds.

I’ve been increasingly curious about the physiology of bud rot and how it interacts with cannabis, but that’s probably a topic best left for another thread after I’ve done some more research...

Thanks to everyone who has weighed in on the topic and endured my often inebriated commentary!

Edit:of my previous post....

L.M.A.O..... So, after reading the rest of the thread I find out @Mrs. Weedstein IS from Oregon. Thats some funny shit right there! What area?
I live west of salem, on the valley side of the coast range. Yea we’re definitely an interesting subspecies of hillbilly in rural Oregon — I’ve heard the term “hippies with guns” and that pretty well sums it up, LOL.

Umm, well; we could be related- in a cousin-screwing-cousin kinda way. Lol. My family settled around Beaver, Blaine, and Tillamook in the 1800's. There was a town named after us many years ago. Population 3? SALUTE!!! (~Hee Haa Style~) We've had many family reunions out that way in the past. And yes, the gun toting, hillbilly shit lives on with our family. Now I understand why I have enjoyed your posts, and agreed with everything you've said in the past, cuz...... Lol
