is there an ip rating on HPS lamps? can you touch a HPS bulb?
 
A cover may effect efficiency initially that is true, but over the lifetime of an expensive light I actually think it be less efficient with out a cover. A farm does not have time to fuck about they need to move fast and the lights will get touched by their hands and the buds, they do not have the time to constantly clean the lights off. A HPS bulb is sealed, it's a different thing and also alot cheaper than an led light.
I am sure I saw a cover available for a hlg board for this reason as HLG know what I'm talking about, I am pretty sure it was for a smaller board though.

why are you gonna touch the leds if you won't touch a hot HPS bulb? the only argument i accept is getting stuff on your panels when you spray your plants. so build a lift for your lights or crank them up manually before spraying, problem solved...
 
If I owned one of those farms I would want something that saved as much time as possible, especially if I had 1000 lights. I guess you could spend the time to raise the lights all the time and do your best to keep them clean and free of dust and other particles if you wanted to save some money on the initial purchase, I wouldn't but I don't own a farm like I would like to.

even if you have a cover you would still need to wipe off the stains, so what exactly do you gain in saving man hours vs. just lifting up the lights?

Put the lift on a timer easy problem solved. What's you next problem? Oh an you mentioned those old shitty not sealed covers lenses they sell those are way worse than not having a cover.
 
So to save money on a light you then need to spend more money on a special lift system for 1000 lights? The only way to know for sure what is right and what is wrong would be to test the degradation over a 3 year period, protected vs non protected, the other issue is heat would have a harder time escaping a protected light so this would add to the overall expense of the light as it would require a better heatsink. From my experience leds last much longer when they are protected from the environment they would be exposed to otherwise so it wouldn't be worth the risk on 1000 lights, if they were protected a simple wipe over between grows would be enough to keep things clean.
 
leds have their own housing...
i would think leds last longer when they are not cramped up inside covers.
..besides losing a good 8% filtered out by them
... its gotta be hot in there..

Like any other piece of electronics, they also run more efficiently when they are cool. Putting a cover would limit airflow. I don't see any issue with LEDs being exposed. If it passes UL then I guess it's fine
 
Leds are porous, with DIY and home growers this is not so much of an issue but for commercial purposes this is an issue. Leds will absorb moisture and anything else in the air and result in fast degregation, I will try and find some research on the subject to explain it. UL approval has nothing at all to do with this.

Doesn't Samsung use a coating on their horticulture diodes for that reason?
 
They just look like normal chips to me and I bet they are normal chips. The entire board would need to be sealed in a coating after being mounted to be done right, this is how fluence solved the problem. Sealed chips are available they use them on led outdoor screens, but that's a different thing to this. Cree have done alot of research on contamination, alot of the time the LED's will recover from contamination, in a grow room there is alot of chemicals in the air and who knows what it is effecting, I believe sulfur is one chemical that is in the air in a grow room and that fucks everything.
 
Anyone rocking these leds Besides me ? Im having great results I started at 31 percent on the dimmer and im know up to 80 percent
