Soil question

I posted this under "do it yourself", and not getting responses, so if you think you're seeing double, you are :p.
(It's not worded the same). I figured maybe I'd get more in the general population ;).

In 2015, I planted 10 pots with new soil (don't remember what kind), and had good luck with my plants. No yellow leaves, etc. Didn't plant in 2016, and in 2017, I used the same soil in the same pots. I used nutrients as I thought they should be used, trying not to overdo, but the leaves were yellowing and dropping off, making me think they were Nitrogen deficient. So, I Over fertilized and got more yellow leaves. I've since learned how to fertilize. In 2018, I put new soil in all the pots (15-20 gal), and had pretty good luck with the leaves *didn't get as much product as when the leaves all turned yellow....go figure*, but didn't have a floor full of leaves, either.

oh, the 'new' soil last year was described by some on the forum as too "hot", even though we tried to get some without a lot of nutrients in it (my husband bought it, and I just couldn't make him take it back 40 miles to the next town)..

So, is the problem 'new' vs 'old' soil? Do I need to get new soil each year?

OH, I plant outdoors.

thanks in advance for any advice

There are people that reuse soil year after year. They just keep amending it. If you're growing outdoors in soil you should check out the Organics forum and Outdoor Growing forum and read up. But no, you don't have to buy new soil each year. Many do buy new soil each grow but some just keep reusing and grow awesome plants year after year.

Good luck.

thanks. I like that idea. It's expensive to buy so much. I'll check out the Organics forum and Outdoor growing forum next.
thanks again!

We have a pile of soil that has been rececycled over a few seasons that we use in a pinch. But has seen a winter at least and we add to it and mix it often.

If it was me and I didn’t have a soil pile or soil that I was confident about, I would get new stuff. Best to ensure your setup for success. There are already so many things that can go wrong over a season and ending up with dank is the goal.
