which one would be better? A 1200w led with 120 10w leds pulling 264 actual watts or a 600w led 120 5w leds pulling 260 actual watts? Units have the same basic dimensions. The 1200w cost about 20 dollars more and are from same manufacture. The bulbs appear to be the only different

They're both shit lights. You wouldn't be able to grow more than a single plant.

well..the 1200 would be better...but they are both crap...i've got a pile of crap leds in a closet...you get what you pay for. if you want to go cheap, the only way to get results is build it yourself, or go hps....

Either would light up a 2x2ft space, much more would be a struggle. Might get 2x3 out of them.

The fact the diodes are 10w or 5w doesn't mean much because they are both been ran to get about the same wattage so would have roughly the same light intensity , one might last longer because technically its been ran softer to get same output.

With 4 actual watts difference that are both pretty much the same. But as @TacoMac stated, they are shit lights. You would do better with a few autocobs even with less wattage use.

When a LED light claims to be a 1200 watt equivalent with only 264 actual watts pulled, you know you are dealing with a crap manufacturer. There is no LED light on the market that can replace 1200 watts of HPS with only 264 watts. It's so ridiculous that you have to laugh. You can't even replace a 600 watter with 260 watts.

Ignore LED entirely unless you are building your own Cree/COB, those are the only LED lights worth anything.

CMH is affordable and will give you what you need, as are DE lights. You can get a 1000w DE light for ~$180 and it dims down to 600w. I'm running that right now in a grow tent with absolutely no problems, granted my plants are only 2 feet tall to provide the 3-4 ft distance from the canopy. If you can't keep a DE 3-4ft away from the canopy, go with CMH.

SE MH/HPS lights are going to be dead soon, they are becoming archaic quite fast. CMH, Cree/COB LED, and DE are all way better choices.

Samsung and Bridgelux strips have excellent efficacy, along with many boards using Samsung LM561C and LM301B diodes

Depends where in the world you are and if you want to buy ready built, kit form or full DIY.
Here are a few examples.
BCBlondes in Canada
Horticultural lighting group, timber grow lights, ChilLED, amare , atrium, COBkits , to name a few in USA.
Cutter.au have a range of LEDs for diy and kits in Australia.
DIYledUK for kits, diy and pre built in the UK.

There are more just don't know much about them.

I was under the impression that the Citizen and Vero were typically DIY projects if you wanted to save money on them, I know you can get some of them pre-assembled but you'll pay damn near double what you would if you build them yourself. Or has this changed recently?

I suppose this is my fault for not being more specific. When I said ignore LED entirely, I meant the blurple fixtures you see on Amazon and eBay. Viparspectra is one that comes to mind. The right LEDs are the future if you can afford it. My comments were directed toward Blurple lights.

neither a 315 w cmh will kill that led 3 x over

The 315 CMH would be a great choice but COBs or Quantum Boards probably the greater choice these days.
