New Tent, Strange Smell

Hi all,

This is my first grow and I'm just getting into bloom phase with my girls. I bought an 8x4 grow tent that I've fitted with a 1000w HPS grow light. I'm using 2 6" inline fans; one for exhaust and one for intake. I will likely add a carbon filter once they start to stink but we're not there yet.

My question is, just yesterday I noticed a strange smell when I walked in the room - and not the good kind like skunk. It was more like oil from an engine. I thought maybe one of my brand new fans was burning out already. I'm not really sure how to inspect them but they both seem to be doing their jobs just fine and are not making any unusually loud sounds. So where could this smell be coming from? The fabric of the tent is my next guess but I've had the tent about two weeks and that "new smell" that was prevalent in the beginning has mostly faded. This is a newer, stronger smell that just started yesterday.

Any ideas?

Electrical has a smell, any dodgy wiring work going on?Warm wires will put out a sent.
Not that I'm aware of. As I mentioned, this is my first grow so I've been experimenting on load balancing the electrical output required. I tripped a breaker once when I was testing the 1000w lighting ballast but then I just adjusted moved a fan over to a different light socket and no over-surges since.

If you unplug the fan and try spinning the impeller, if it spins freely then it's not binding enough to create heat in the bearings that would make for an hot oil smell.
