Seeds don't pop open

Hey ...I ordered seeds from Mephisto, I can only grow two at a time because of space. So one popped open, and I placed it in the medium nine days now and it hasn't come up yet! The other seed never popped open, I threw it away, and started the soak on one more, now it will not pop. I'm using distilled water to soak them in. The first two seeds I soaked for ten hours, and used the paper towel trick, and just one popped. What is going on with these seeds?

My procedure never fails .
Scuff seeds in scuff box (150-180g) 60-90 sec
Put seeds in water for 12hours , then wet paper towel & into a ziplock for 12-24 hours , once tails are showing , into medium.
75-80 for temp,
If no tails , I’ll manually crack them between a finger n thumb nail. Then paper towel for another 12

10 hours?
Not enough time.
Some seeds take 3 or 4 days.
Some never pop.

Rule of thumb for me... if i want 4 female plants i will germinate 12 seeds (regs, not fems), knowing some wont pop and some will be males that will have to be culled and some will pop but never really grow right (runts and such).

If i want 4 females from fem seeds i will germinate at least 6...

How is this not obvious common sense?

First off, the paper towel is not a trick. It's an unnecessary step. There is no need to fiddle around with starting seeds. Put them in some soil, water them in, keep moist, wait to sprout. I get 99.9999999999999% germination just sticking seeds directly into soil. You don't need to use distilled water, tap is fine. The more you handle the seeds the more potential for something to go wrong.

I just put these into soil about a week ago. Nothing special, no tricks, etc... I just put them into some reused soil and waited for them to sprout. 4 seeds 4 sprouts. It really is that simple.

Yeah you can plant directly in the soil. I’ve had success with that method put I prefer the paper towel method.

You need to plant the seed deep enough so it can push through the soil and break away from the seed.

I'm not going to say the paper towel method doesn't work because it obviously does. I think some people would have better luck just going into soil. You obviously know what you're doing. But some over soak, let the paper towel dry out, let the taproot get too long, etc... I just think that some people would have better success with less handling.

I can germinate a seed no issues. I can’t keep a seedling alive though. 5 died on me. On the 6th and she’s chugging along.

I’ve noticed a lot of people don’t plant deep enough. Seed needs to be deep enough so that when it starts to push through the soil the seed falls off. I’ve had several that keep the seed on and that’s because they weren’t planted deep enough.

Getting the same problems on my end except my personal crosses don't have that problem. Only recent online seed purchases is what I'm having problems with. They will crack open with a 24 hour soak but then they just stall, I've used my standard coir, peat and rapid rooters in my propagation chamber with a heating mat with the temp set at 75 and still no luck after 20 days.

Well that's a drag. Once they pop they should be good to go. Over the years I've found the biggest problems with people starting from seed is dampening off or planting into too hot of soil. Keeping seedlings too wet will slow down root development and can lead to fungus and dampening off. Too hot of soil can fry a delicate seedling before it gets a chance to get started. I used some FoxFarms Ocean Forest awhile back and those seedlings struggled out of the gate which is odd because I've used it before without issues. I don't think their blend is consistent so now I make my own with promix, ewc, and vermiculite. But I didn't have any mixed so I just used old soil for my recent seeds I started and they're doing fine.

I don't use a dome either. Seedlings have a root system and can get what they need from the soil unlike freshly taken clones that need the higher humidity a dome provides.

I hope you get your issues worked out. Good luck.

I've found that seeds I make typically start out more robust than many seeds I purchased online. Some seeds being sold are rather old and the supply chain is sketchy at best. How they're stored, etc... I am currently growing a Tikal from ACE seeds. It had a date of 07/07/14 on the package. Which made it over 4 years old when I planted it. It popped just fine so it's a hit and miss I guess.

Fuck you all then if no one wants to buy my 'Germinating Sheets' ®©.

Going to start a ttoll account on icmag and sell ot there, they know a good thing when they see it.

Also looking for a CEO and receptionist (one that can roll joints time not like when i started that bogus boveda company and had to take on one of growmaus useless lot after his sales slumped).

So ya fuck you all for not investing, one second you want to buy hype the next its all 'no were real growers and all that bs bro science taught in universities and educated places is for suckers....

I'm seeing a lot more seeds from vendors that don't look mature enough to begin with. Small seeds with very little to none tiger striping on them.

No I don't need no stinking germination sheets. I don't need a dozen bottles of nutes either or a $900 light. But good luck. But seriously, you could probably just repackage some toilet paper, slap a fancy label on it, give it a cool name, and people would buy it.

Good luck :bigjoint:
