Did you know cover crops are used to use excess nitrogen in large scale agriculture?
Actually using red clover (and other specific plants such as hairy vetch) as a cover crop is used to add nitrogen into the soil to reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. Disked under it also adds beneficial "green manure" to the soil as it decomposes.
