Fabric pots

1. So after reading about transplanting out of fabric pots i saw that you have to run a knife arpund the side to loosen the roots. Then i saw some root bags that unzip on the side to allow easier transplanting. So i figured i will cut my pots once down the side, then hold it together with some safety pins until transplant. Good idea or bad idea?

I would say bad Idea unless you safety pin the hell out of it. When you go to water, soil will be wash out of cut. Running a knife along the side to break roots free doesn't hurt the plant much. I know guys and gals who break their root balls up a bit when they transplant to get the roots free and taking a hold of the new soil a lot faster.

I put my smaller bags into bigger ones and call it a day. I have bags starting at party cup sizes up to 5 gallon and haven’t had issues with it

Why not go half way between and stitch some zips into them once they are cut.
If your going to safety pin then overlap the joint nice.
Cant see it been a massive issue to be honest.

Look man, don't start with a fabric pot if you're just going to transplant. Start in plastic then transplant to your final container which is a fabric pot. If you use fabric the whole way through, cut around the bottom of the pot and drop it down in to the upsize. Then throw the shit out. They're too cheap to penny pinch. If you want to re-use them, don't destroy them obviously. In that case let the plant dry out then massage it around the side and push the root ball up as you work the bag down.

just trying to get different viewpoints of how other people do it, i think thats good advice to finish in the smart pot. so i think i will uppot to air pots then transfer the plant to final resting place after 1 gal air pot, put it in 5 gal smartpot.

just had the idea because my seedlings are in peat pots right now, ive noticed when i water i can feel how noist the peat pots are and having been manually poking some holes in the sides to allow the seedling roots air/faster drying of soil. seems to be working pretty good.

yes, the roots will grow through.
you can also let the medium dry out throughly, & slide the old fabric pot off , works well & my choice.

All I use is fabric pots. I Never cut a pot open I just press around all the sides of the pot to loosen it up a bit and they usually come right out. I always put a little water on them to help keep the medium together.
