Not wishing to throw a monkey wrench into proceedings, but I hadn't heard the phrase 'monkey it up' until now (UK based). Offhand, I would have assumed it was derivative from one of the many older sayings with the word 'monkey' in them. I know (at least from the 'monkey' sayings I came into contact with here ..there are many) they were innocently formed.
Like; this morning it was cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.
Also (from a UK perspective), for at least a couple of hundred years (especially in working class areas, imo) terms with monkey in them were very common. And most/all seem quite innocently based on a number of different cultures mythologies and stories of playful monkeys etc (and obvious idiosyncrasies noticed during interactions that made it into 'pop' culture of those times ..and into the language). And in the UK, more often then not, they seemed mostly pointed at children
