How do I properly germinate my seeds? Will they sprout with no light?

I've got a couple of grows under my belt but still haven't got the germination down as of yet. I've been using starter plugs. Place seed in keep moist and hope for the best. I've been reading that a lot of growers pre soak seeds overnight. I've also read about the paper towel method. I really want to germinate in the plug.

Using the paper towel method the seeds are kept in a moist, warm, and dark environment and when the taproot pops its moved to growing medium.

My real question is this. If I place the seeds in the plugs and keep in the warm, damp, and dark area will they sprout without light? Reason i'm asking is the location will be in a place with no light and I want to make sure they will sprout out of the plugs with no light. Once sprouted I can move to grow area. Please get me an answer to this question.........

What if I just wanted to use the plug from beginning to end...not use the paper towel, will they still sprout out of the plug with no light?

yea but once they sprout they need that light right away, they can only provide so much food before they die.

idk the presoaking for 12-24 didnt help me for shit
neither did the paper towells,

but they were never in 100% dark warmness the had light exposure. o idk

i have way better luck just planting them in moist soil and putting them under an infared heat lamp untill they pop..

and also the hit i tried might not have worked because they are random seeds

not to jack your thread, but the little knot on the seeds, should it be up or down once its placed in the soil. before the roots have sprouted of course

lol

the par of the seed that is coming out more than the other rounded side should go DOWN at an angle with the point

think about it where do the seeds crack? they crack on the side that buldges out then the root goes down and the cracked seed goes up and splits and the cotyls come out..

so either way kinda helps the plant if u put he seed pointy/buldgy side down at that angle

If you want to be sure you get a seed germinated do it like they need it.

Get -a heating pad (mostly used for iguana - from pet shop)
-a hand towel (soak, put seeds in)
-something to put the towel on (not directly on the heating pad but something that lets heat through still warmish)
-something to cover everything and keeps moist in.

i have germinated a tail as long as 2 cm over 24 hours, its the fastest and most successfully way i have found.

If you like i could show some pics, just say so.

ok i germinated in plugs myself, the jiffypot brand ones that rise when you sit them in a bowl of water. i let a bunch rise and poked seeds down into them. i had success of at least 3/10 germinating and sprouting HOWEVER. you cant tell what way they are going to grow in one of these so remember to take the net off the side so it doesnt grow into it 2 of mine did and i never saw them they got all wriggled up inside.

buddy mentioned the heat lamp above, i bought one with the idea of shining it on my plugs to speed up the process and never used it in the trial, took about a week to see a sprout and i threw them out dissatisfied im wondering how much more successful it will be using a lamp on the dirt?

He's not asking how to germinate - he already said he'd rather use plugs! His question is about light during the germination process!

No light is pretty much what you get below the soil surface! So the answer should be obvious - no light is required for seeds to germinate! Light is required as soon as they "break the surface"!

I Didn't realize this thread would cause such a stir, but yea, all I really wanted to know was if light was needed to germinate and sprout. My plugs will sit in an area where its very warm but no light. I wanted to make sure they would pop out of the plugs without the help of light. Thanks for everyone's replies though, gives me several ideas on germination methods.

You just cant beat a prop, and yes i pre soak the seeds whan they come through keep the light about 1.5m away from them dont hit them with hot strong lights straight away you will fry them, best of luck in the future.

my seeds just cracked and i put them in rockwool, is it better too wait until they come out with pure darkness or should i put a plug with light , and i was wondering that if you put the crack point pointing up, will that be ok cuz ive heard two different stories?
