This friend of mine reminds me of the three stooges and he is all three. I have helped him try to find info on different things as he attempted to grow his first hydroponic grow.
This, along with any questions or problems answers you all want to throw out there could be called the LFAQ or Least Frequently Asked Questions. You will find those questions that took you the longest to find the answers to, not the ones you can find if you do a google.
Here is a start to the questions he had on his first grow.
1. When calculating PPM or TDS, do you take a reading of your source water and subtract that from the reading you get after you mixed in your ferts. A. Yes, of course, it only makes sense, right? You really should find out what all is in that water as well. Best choice, use distilled water, that way almost all of your PPM will be what you have added.
2. When done preforming a check with the Hanna Primo TDS meter, what is the best way to clean the unit? A. Use the same solution you just checked or use distilled water. No use getting the PPM of your source water stuck up in the probe. This answer came from Hanna Tech person. I have no idea what getting the source water PPM all stuck up inside the probe means but I now use distilled water.
3. What does it mean when the Hanna Primo shows ------ instead of a number? Probably that you have exceeded the limit of the meter. In Other words, this meter measures from 0-1999 PPM, if my mix is higher then 1999, say 2000 PPM, it will show ------ instead of the PPM
This was just one of his problems, figuring out that meter. The directions would make a great book marker, but does not say much else, nor does it say much more on Hanna web site but the techs know. You have a question for them, call 800-426-6287. You get right through to the techs, at leat he did, no waiting at all. Don't know if this is always the case or not.
Be sure to post your hard to find answers to the questions you had, no matter how dumb they may seem. If the answer is obvious and you still could not figure out the answer, tell us about it. I am sure someone else is dealing with the same question. Like my friend and his meter, we both figured that subtracting the source PPM from the total PPM would be correct, he wanted to be sure, not assume.

I sort of figured that, I don't have a PPM/TDS/EC tester yet. Thanks for posting that as sooner or later I was going to ask as there is always crap in water anyways.
