Fan/Filter different size

Hi all, currently have a 6” RVK outake fan, with a 8” carbon filter, using a reducer, struggling with the temp so upgrading to a 10” Rhino fan which is on the way, with 10” ducting and was going to use the reducer to down size to the 8” carbon filter...

Will this be like running a 8” fan? Dont really want to lump out on a new carbon filter just yet and also didnt want to get a 8” fan incase it still wasnt enough. Would rather go bigger and upgrade carbon filter later if i still require it.

Also: how important is using an intake fan aswell, i have an AC incoming pipe but dont use an intake fan due to hot outside temps, but been consodering buying the ram air pro controller which balances the intake/outake... should i add an intake even if the outside air is warm?

Thanks Guys

Depends on your room really when it comes to an outtake fan, I dont use one in my 5x5 tent the outtake is powerful enough to pull fresh air through the vents and I keep the room the tents in well ventilated instead, as for your outtake I'm not too sure but if I had to make an educated guess I would say that as your carbon filter already reduces your fans power, using a filter larger than the fan could only further that reduction in my opinion. I'm no expert and could be wrong, I can pretty much guarantee you wont see any benifets from a filter larger than the fan though if smells not a concern I'd just take the filter off and cap the duct end with some cheap DIY screen to keep pests and what not out

I may not of explained it well, currently the filter is larger but that was for no benefit it was all they had in stock when i set up. But im buying a 10” fan and keeping my 8” filter, so im actually reducing down to the filter..

I want to know if i need to buy a 10” filter to see the full benefit of the new 10” fan, common sence would say yes but im hoping someone will say no i dont need larger filter and save me some coins haha

Cheers mate, Aka

It depends on the cfm of the fan and the cfm of the filter. Usually the filter should be higher cfm than the fan.
If the cfm is higher than the filter then the contact time of smelly air to the filter is too little and thus the smell isn't cleaned completely.

In that case you want to add a speed controller and run it less than full. I recommend a variac which controls the speed by changing the voltage but there are cheap speed controllers too, just be prepared for a hum noise with cheap ones as they work by turning the fan on and off many times a second.

Short answer is its not recommended but you will have to play it by nose!

Ill be honest i dont know the CFM of the Filter but that makes complete sence, i have just ordered the ram air pro fan controller, which is one of the best on the market i believe. Your answer make logic sence, thanks mate. I will like you say just test it out, the smell isnt the issue at the minute its the heat, i want to ramp up my lights and keep the temp stable. Struggling with a 6” fan, hence upgrading to the 10”, if some how i am still struggling with the heat ill fork out for the larger filter.

Also, i not using an intake at the mo due to outside temp being warm this summer, got a AC blowong cold air on but i guess its not fresh air. So adding an intake fan as soon as my new fan controller comes as this balance the intake and outake well to keep negative pressure i believe.

What are your thoughts guys, the middle back one seems stumped at the minute, do i hang in there and keep the double middle pot or remove and go for three monsters??

Intake fans are usually not needed, as long as the room itself is not sealed and air can come in somehow. Windows, floor vents, wall vents, chimneys, door gaps ect.
If your running HPS or other bulb lighting, best thing for reducing temps is air cooled hoods.

It wont catch up but if its not sick and roots are healthy then stick with it.

What is your set up?
I see three lights. What wattage and what size space?

At the moment all 3 lights running at 400watts it a 2.4x1.2 tent, will be upping to 600w each as soon as i get my new fan and controller.

Its a box room, window never open, but loft hatch is in the room and hatch door is open so guess it pulls air from down there, i have all vent flaps open and my air con unit blowing cold air in via ducting.

That back middle Plant looks healthy just much smaller, few people think its pointless having two in one tank anyway, they say ill get exactly the same results as having a single in there. Will just leave it in there for now.

I have the equipment to bang a 6inch intake on if it may help

Your filter will determine the Max cfm you can use, for example,

Can-Lite 9000 Plastic w/o Flange
  • Max Exhaust CFM: 425 m³h / 250 cfm
  • Max recirculating (Scrubbing) CFM: 850 m³h / 500 cfm
  • Prefilter: Yes
  • Outside Diameter: 145 mm / 5.5"
  • Height: 635 mm / 25"
  • Total Weight: 4.7 kg / 10.4 lbs.
  • Carbon Weight: 3 kg / 6.6 lbs.
  • Carbon Bed Depth: 1.25"
  • Housing: Plastic
  • Max Operating Temp: 80ºC
  • Max Humidity: 70%

Just don't render your filter useless by pulling too much too fast.
