Ladybugs are like right around the corner here. I don't think I have weeks to wait though, but it might be my secondary attack once they grow immune to my first treatment. I am leaning towards Fox Farms Miticide, since I have used that on my tomato plants in the past.
 
Yes that is a aphid not a mite.....and it is better to release lady bugs...then to spray poison.
Hosing down your plant will wash them off too.
 
Imo everyone grabs a bottle of pesticides at the first glance of any bug. Unless it is mites you do not have to spray it ......they are aphids....I get them every year. Never once have I sprayed.

This is where calcium, silica, and healthy organics comes into play because it makes the leaf tougher and the bug finds it harder to attack.

I have been sitting here for an hour debating putting this shit on my babies. Thanks for the intervention. I am returning this crap to Stein's.

I am not as concerned as I was yesterday. My plants are healthy, exploding and happy. I will monitor and take action if needed.

Now that is smart thinking sir.! You can get them on amazon. I do suggest when you get them to not releasing all of them all at once. They will almost all be gone by a.m.
Another way to be proactive is to read up on hatching preying mantis eggs. They take a while to hatch but I plan on doing this for my garden next yr.

I'm not sure what you initially purchased, but Safer brand insect killing soap, which is what I use, isn't poison. It's OMRI listed, if that matters to you, for one thing. More importantly though, the way it works is to essentially dehydrate soft-bodied insects by drying out their outer skin. It's made from naturally derived ingredients and safe to use.

I will check it out. Is it a spray application or the powder?
 
You can buy it as a liquid concentrate or a ready mixed spray. I like to have that as well as their caterpillar killer on hand, just in case I need them.

The more tools one has in one's toolbag, the better equipped one is to handle problems as they arise. I think Confucius said that. :mrgreen:

Guys just because something is organic doesn't make it good or make it where someone should smoke it.

Plus you are harming beneficial bugs.... we have a bee problem and everyone should be more conscious about what we are spraying and what bugs we are harming.

The points you make is the reason why my plants are still untouched by insecticides. I just cannot bring myself to do it.
 
I know to the experienced grower this is no big deal. But for a first time newbie like me, I am on top of the world when I see this on my lil' one. Oddly, she is about a week ahead of big sis on pistil development. Lil' one probably gets less direct sun during the day, and therefore might have a slightly different clock as a result. But Big sis is sprouting hairs too.

Lol I get just as excited every year myself. I always feel like a kid on Christmas morning every fall. :)
 
Witnessing my first stretch is wild. Everyone has referenced it, but seeing it happen is very cool. Here is what I mean:

7/25/18: First measurements recorded.
Plant 3 - 59 inches vertical (4.90 FT)
Plant 4 - 40 inches vertical (3.30 FT)

8/4/18. Big Sis 67 inches (5.60 FT)
Lil Sis 49 inches (4.10 FT)

I am just amazed by this current situation!

5 days from my last update. Both plants have transformed to flowering stage beautifully. Huge new areas of growth with all sorts of bud spots and crowns. Especially the big girl, who shadows over her lil' sis and steals all the sun! Both are super healthy and look to be ready any day now. I am at two weeks since seeing the first small pistils, and now calyx and pistils are all over the place. Also of note is that I am aware every morning now that the girls are getting more night time hours, and it is a significant decrease in sunlight the last 10 days here in SE Wisconsin. Have also witnessed two ladybugs in my garden. Awesome!! I sense buds will start very soon now!!

Pistils are becoming thicker and an almost milky, resin-like look to them. That is a significant change in their appearance over the last 24 hours. See first two images. Is this a normal thing as peak maturity is reached?


I have included two images of both girls just because I am so proud of this first effort!! They are beautiful, in my opinion. I am really looking forward to what harvest holds in store for me.
