4 clu048-1212 3500k + hlg-120h-c1050a

Helping a buddy doing a first time grow, he wanted to buy an all in 1 kit (tent/light/filter) on Amazon and I said we could come close in price with quality components instead

Looking at 4 clu048-1212 3500ks on a meanwell hlg-120h-c1050a with moduled 9950 heatsinks.

My numbers say this should be good for about 140w or 35w per cob.

Is this sufficient for a 32x32x63 tent growing 2 plants at a time. He wants to do northern lights auto for first run

If he plans to fill that space with plants, then no, it isn't enough. If he keeps the growth in check, and doesn't let the canopy spread past roughly 2'x2', then yes, 140w should be fine. And though wattage doesn't tell the whole story, it's a reasonable metric when comparing against other fixtures that are using similar components; other COB/QB/strip builds usually average around 30-40 watts per square foot.

Which had good reviews on Amazon, and I've seen listed under a few "top 10 grow lights 2018" but I've only seen 1 grow actually using the thing, which turned out great but still iffy. Is 70 bucks cheaper though

Not knowing the chips in that light and knowing its only a 200w light I can say its still not enough for a 3x3 area.
You were on the right track before, just under required wattage.
Why not go for your first idea and then keep within a 2x2 and double up on lighting for the second grow?

Just so you know, take no notice of Amazon reviews, they are either paid for or based on guys who opened the box on delivery, plugged it in, saw it worked and left a glowing review. Maybe some people even vegged with them for a while, but nobody waits 3 month to leave a review.
Also take no notice of "top ten grow light 2018" web pages. They are just sponsored pages actually designed to send people to amazon. I don't remember the technical name for such pages , but they are just bull shit.

There was once a time when we could safely say go with COBs if you want good leds, but since the great COB rush every cheap ass manufacturer making LEDs jumped on the COB train and started pumping out any old shit because they know the term COB sells lights.. :wall:

There are other options but im going to guess they would be a bit over your budget since your looking at clu048 1212 citizen COBs (which are fine btw, just cheapest option)

Have you checked out LEDgardeners Strip builds on his site? Probably a bit more expensive but still one of the most cost effective solutions. :bigjoint:

I have built a few "lamps" for another grower,(which I don't mind), however, I can imagine sending future inquiries to check out that work right there....

Something a bit more square would be better but Jesus that's a cracking price compared to what I was looking at on LED gardener for a 3x3.

That's what I'm saying, I thought my 4 cob setup for $160 was decent, his 200w 6 strip for $160 is looking like the winner.

I dont believe my friend intends to use the entire 32x32 he chose that size because most 24x24 only comes in 48 height and he wanted the extra 15 inches of headroom that the 63 provides, like I said he only intends to grow 1 or 2 plants at a time, he only smokes when he golfs which is 3 or 4 times a month, truthfully 50g would probably last him a year. His other hobby is moonshine lol

I'm betting that once he starts growing his own, he'll start smoking more. But yes, this would be a great first light and will surely set him on his way!

Thanks everyone, help has been greatly appreciated. As a general opinion, northern lights auto pretty easy for a first grow? I read the strain is very forgiving. I'm not a grower, call me a professional researcher and lifelong curiosity on the topic.

I don't know Autos im afraid but if its anything like fem Northern lights its an easy strain. I love the taste of Northern lights. It reminds me of been a teenager when weed was cheap and girls were easy. :bigjoint:

If you're meaning to slide them in to the center, that design won't work. Itd need a bracket that allows the whole strip to move within it.
