hi people
so i was going to calibrate my ph meter its just one of them cheap $10 yallow meters and it came with powdered ph calibration 4.0 and 7.0 that is mixed with distilled water.

so my question is. do they work and are they accurate enough

You can just use a tablespoon or so of baking soda in a glass of water to calibrate it. You tube has some quicknvids on this topic

Those standards should work fine I’ve used one of those pool ph pens for years they are actually pretty accurate for a ten dollar pen. I’ve cross checked them against my expensive unit at work and they come out real close they just lose their accuracy after a bit about 3-6 months tops but not bad for ten bucks. Make sure when you mix the powder if it says 250 ml that’s exactly what you mix put it in the low first turn the screw to make the pen show 4.0, if it doesn’t, then put it in the 7.0 do the same should be golden.

i will use them then. not having something to cross check is a problem for me but i guess ill put my trust in them packets being right

You’ll be good those packets are pretty accurate as long as you mix with the correct amount. Just replace that pen every three months or so not worth going cheap there’s a solution in them the expensive ones you can refill the cheap ones garbo. Watch e bay sometimes the good units go on there used those things are tanks. But you could get by with those pens forever to. Good luck and happy growing!

Or there's always litmus papers
i have them do you really use them. i dont trust them although i expect them to be right i find them too hard to determine between colors. i haven't done a grow relying on them but i have considered it. the ones i have show 7.0 6.0 and 5.0 pretty much the same color

I use the one in the pic right there. It works great for me and I have one of the pens and have found mys of checking the pen readings with the drops. The pen was a waste of money and time. If you have to have one spend the money on a good one in my opinion

well since i dont do organic grows needing someway to check ph.

does the stuff in the photo from general hydroponics register lower then 6.0. maybe i got the wrong stuff yrs ago. i could put pure ph down mixed with them drips and it cap out at 6

Ya it does go lower than 6. I keep the bottle next to it to compare colors. You won’t get to an exact number but I shoot for a range anyway. I have read and heard a lot that the nutes get used in different ph ranges. I’m still a noob to all this so I’m just passing on my tiny experience and what I have heard

I buy the cheap yellow jellas and a bottle of 7.. good enough fr me. I like to have a couple round at all time though but usually only check ph if I change things or noticing any issues. I also had problems noticing color difference with drops/strips.

I remember when I first got my meter.. shits would take me like an hour to mix up a gallon or two of juice lol good times.

those packets of powder have all been spot on for me but like mike said you gotta be proper with the amount of water you add them to.

i only check ph when i change something normally i dont need to as i have mixed the same nutes with the same water and level of water for months so its pretty much few drops of that and a few ml of this = feed done takes 2 mins
now i am trying dwc or realistically im trying kratky method of hydroponics having correct ph is becoming more relevant
ill take the risk with them packets hell if other people use them they must be ok

I was a dialysis nurse and yes I use and trust them. You're not mixing a critical drug or explosive.
