Hello All,
I've been gone for a while, but back in the game again. Real quick about me: I grow dirt or hydro scrog, and talk in actual watts.
I built my box, and had it all figured out except for the lighting. I'm an old CFL guy, but in starting again I want to go LED and build my own COB setup, but haven't gotten around to researching; shopping around for what I want; building it yet.
Long story short, I had access to super cheap throw away vanity lighting, and LED bulbs for $1 each.
I also wanted to do a test grow on my box with bag seed to make sure the box could handle temp and humidity extremes in either direction.
So, I made this to do the job until I have the time to build the lights that will ultimately replace this thing. I'm in the middle of renovating a house and had most of this stuff around anyway. Keep in mind I grow scrog, I threw it together in about 15min one night in the garage. If I remember right it measures 3'x3'. (I lifted it in the first pic so you can see it.)
I threw in 100W of 3000k CFL's for added spectrum, but the rest are 5000K. I honestly don't know how many bulbs are on there right now. I loosened them all, and just tighten a little when I want, so some aren't lit yet. I'm also going to put more Y's along the outside when the time comes.
As of those pictures, here is the wattage: (Not all bulbs are screwed in yet. These are 9w 800lm 5000k, and for flower I have 17.5w 1700lm 2700k bulbs)
It's not really doing that bad of a job. Not very much stretch, they seem happy.
As far as heat, it isn't that bad for what it is. My setup right now is set for 80-82F and 50-55%RH, 18hrs. It really doesn't try that hard to keep it in there. I've never seen it go out of range, actually. As expected, the light plays tricks on my camera. In pictures and on video the numbers to my meters scroll, but that says 81.3F.
Now that it's built and been running, I kind of want to see what it will do. It's a beast.
If enough people are interested, I'll do a journal on this light if only for education purposes. My box has passed all tests, but I'll do a full run with this bagseed under this light. I'm really curious to see what it will do will a load of 2700k 17w bulbs. Might just call it good and push my real cob build down the road until winter.
Oh, the plant in the center is 3 weeks old and topped yesterday. I had 4, had to kill 3, so I'll keep topping this one until the others catch up after a top or two.
Don't judge my setup completely yet as it isn't finished, just finished enough for now. I need to get my scrog setup in there and reflect some of that side light back.
