I use soil also. I fill cup {or pot} 1/3 full with my full season soil mix, then the 2nd 1/3 with my soil mix cut in half with quality potting soil with no nutes. Then the top 1/3 with just potting soil. Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep and water well.

i actually read a really good point, Buy Clear Solo Cups, Cut holes on the bottom. Fill the cup half way with whatever soil you choose, And then when the plant pops out, Onces it reaches the top of the Sup fill the remain amount of soil in cup. Plus for the Clear cup you can see the roots growing and will know when to transplant

But you want to cover that with a colored cup {with holes in it}. Light will hurt the roots.

But I would go ahead and fill the cup up with soil. The little plant is going to stay in it 3-4 weeks, so it will need all the ferts in the soil.

Rockwool and seeds are not a good match.
Once they are sprouted and then put in rockwool, they take off like crazy...

You are better off starting the seeds in coco coir or soil.

As far as the cups, I use black solo cups for my clones and I paint the lids with color coding so I know what's what.
I use rockwool for clones (with copious amounts of Clonex) inside a net pot in the lid of the solo cup, before transferring into hydroton. Like mini Kratky systems, which they do quite well in.
But if you are going into soil, just stick with soil the whole way through.

Clone's i start in Cubes .
Seeds, I start in Soil Like Bio Bizz.
Only full the Pot half way up with soil,so when the seedling stretches, you an add more soil. And cover the stem.Once it starts its second set of true leaves.

I also like to put clones right up to there first set of leafs this helps with the 2 day wilt,But seedlings will all ways be easier to grow when there in soil ,but no matter how close the light is they will stretch,so half full the pot thenn once it stops stretching full inthe sides with soil ,You will find roots will come from this stem any how.

Hope this Helps Tyke
