don`t forget that we increase longlife of the leds aswell if we double² the number of led chips.
Longlife is really hard to measure, but i`m shure that a led, that run @ 10% of max. current is able
to survive some of u growers.
Prices for electricity are rising - and if you calculate the KWh of a 500W led fixture during
200.000h of life = (100000KWh) // even 3,7% less electricity for the same light could be worth good money, to invest it into your design before - for a better heat management, spread and closer distance to canopy. And we know that half distance means quadrupled flux.

not a factor for me when these cobs have LM80s of 70K hours at high currents

at 500 mA vs 1000 mA you cob is still going to be obsolete long before you notice a lumen maintenance difference

capital investment vs payback time is a fundamental and has been discussed to death. the softer you run leds the longer the payback period

just as an example (with no actual data but its like this)
going from 100W/cob to 50W you need 2x the cobs so lets say it takes 2 more years to pay for that
going from 100W/cob to 25W you need 4x the cobs so lets say it takes 6-8 more years to pay for that
going from 100W/cob to 12.5W you need 8x the cobs so it could take 10-15 years to pay for that

And we know that half distance means quadrupled flux.
at a single point on-axis in a non reflective environment maybe. you dont "make more flux" it just spreads out.
in a reflective environment the inverse square rule is barely applicable

And it's the same with COB's!
Try it with 26v on an 36v chip... nothing will happen!
There are minimal requirements as well and the worse the quality, the narrower the usable range!

With my cheap $2 34V cobs, they will just barely start to glow at around 25V, and will draw about 20 mA.

It's different product with the same chips, if you find legit one. If they're SMD chips, it's even not stealing because of different chips - you know, "upgrading" or "downgrading".
It's the layout , specs , connectors and overall cloned specifics .....
The Chinese steal / copy / reverse engineer ALL forms of tech. I emailed a few for shits and giggles and they did a lot of arm twisting to get me to bite. If you want to send your money to so sweat shop in mainland China that states we use said diodes but replace it with 5630s or some other shit , then it's on you. They even list the name Quantum Board on most listings ....

It really isn't that hard for some person to send " data " from a website to get a work order request to get a tester board created ... Even their " meanwell " drivers are sketchy as fuck. They label something UL compliant or certified and it's nothing more than a sticker.

Why take a chance ? At least at HLG , you get exactly what you want PLUS they have great customer service.

i agree with everything you posted in your example, its pretty in line with my numbers. mine was obviously hypothetical (and not assuming overpriced $45 CXBs at 25W each) but we are in the same ball park

great case of how doubling cobs takes 6 years to pay back - more efficient is not always better. would be really hard to make the case for the 40 cob rig

"140 LM@ 50 cm" is no unit of measure

1000 ppfd at the canopy is the same to the plants regardless of whether you used 154, 140, or even 90 lm/W light source to get it

(Apart from temperature effects which may work for or against you depending on your situation)

Volcanoes in Hawaii, earthquakes in California... The price you pay for perpetual summer. I'll stay right here in Michigan. A couple of snowstorms a year just mean I get to stay home from work.
