in case the pot wasnt the full 100k, or if you want to squeeze the maaaaax power out of the driver you need over 100k ohms of resistance.

I use that one you linked and mine is 108k ohms, no need to use a resistor for me

@Aolelon also to ensure you cannot dim lower than 10% (10k resistance), as going lower is not recommended for some (most? HLGs?) drivers. Don´t quote me on the second part, as that would depend on each driver spec sheet, etc.
 
Well when I use the 100k on my strips it only dims it to about 10% I'd say, although I havent checked the resistance of it. I just assumed 100k potentiameter would be rated for that.
 
You dont have to solder. You can but the pot I linked has tabs so you can use the little female wire clamps. I can remember the name of them but they work find. Pretty sure it's just a female wire connector. But you have to find one small enough, I had some on hand.
 
100K should dim to 90% so its either wired wrong of the wrong pot

It is not that hard to solder... there is one little secret ingredient to the process that people often don't get taught about...
Buy solder flux and use it on the wire you want to solder.
It firstly strips oxidized crap off the metal surface leaving a good bonding surface that won't reject the lead, it also acts as a wetting agent making the solder flow rather than run off in balls.
If you solder, you can use heat shrink and move it over the joint for a seamless joint.

You can do it.

Ah yes female crimp connectors. Those are a good option if you mount the pot in a junction box. If they are moving around a lot those will eventually come loose. I would hate to have my light cycle get messed up due to a loose connection.

If I were to go to a metal shop and ask them to cut me a custom alum for the backplate/cooling of my LED strips.. how thick should I tell them? 1/8"? 3/16"? Also should I do sheet or plate? Thanks!

Thickness is not relevant to cooling ability - that's determined by the surface area. Thicker material will just take longer to reach temperature stability, but the final stable temp will be the same.
 
Most people use U channel for the heatsinks, but I dont see why aluminum plating wouldn't work as well.

Nothing to it, solder one dimmer lead to the first plug on the left, solder the second one to the middle. You cant mix up the wires, if you do the only thing that changes it is the way you have to turn it to dim it.
 
Hi Hlg and everyone. What is the recommended hanging and spacing and coverage if you are running your qbs at 60w - 80w each in a matrix over a large cannopy?
