Hi there I'm just a newbie and I just got a new 1000 watt metal halide. Just wondering if I'm gonna cook my lil plants. I grew them under florescent lights so far

you're the one getting cooked.
i wouldn't put that baby in your bedroom:

big infrared spike with the HIDs (metal halide is a high intensity discharge HID)
a 400w HID bulb makes a 2ft (not diameter) radius electromagnetic field sphere while turned on... don't put (rather strong electro)magnets near your head too long
HID does give off UV, more so the MH than HPS, don't stare. (10,000 kelvin lamps are dangerous UV but that's not the kind you have)

end safety rant. Keep plants like 2-4ft away from lamp, bigger plants = lamp closer.

They will love it but you may have to harden them off a bit. Start with just a couple hours under new lights and then give them some shade. Increase duration every day for a few days and they'll be good to go.

I don't mean to steal your thread, but since we're on topic: Is it okay to sleep in a 10x10 room that has a 3'x3'x5' tent in the corner using 400w MH/HPS?

I did. Same lamp, similar tent, similar room.
I don't want to scare people. But My limited informed opinion says don't sleep 2ft from a 400w, which just kinda makes sense.

Indoor growing can be gross because you're doing science in your house. Use common sense and your smarts, safety first.

If you can cool it off then no problem. Is it in a tent? Is it just hanging in a corner of the room?

Hijacking this thread, sorry! but I have a 400w MH running with an open bat reflector, will I not only worry about cooking my girls but will there be a problem with the reflector getting extremely hot and burn? Kind of a silly question but I've had my light on for about 30 mins and tried touching the top and couldnt touch it for more then 15 seconds. Anyone else ever see this as a problem?

Kind of a silly question but I've had my light on for about 30 mins and tried touching the top and couldnt touch it for more then 15 seconds. Anyone else ever see this as a problem?

Best to have a fan blowing across in between the plants and lamp directed to blow the heat up and away to be exhausted.

Some clip a little 6” fan right to the reflector to blow across the bulb. Ghetto air cooled lamp like that.

Normal for wing reflector
