Grow bags for outdoor maters and peppers

I'm an indoor mj grower but do my veggies outside. Trying to do some planning now. Getting ready to germ up my various tomato and pepper seeds. For years I've had my veggie garden straight in the ground. This year I want to go above ground.

Questions for you outdoor peeps. What is the optimal size for outdoor grow bags? 5, 7, 10, 20 gallon?

I'm a prime member so free shipping. Amazon has several different options. Anything to stay away from?

the only thing i don't like about them is you have to water shit EVERY DAY if it doesn't rain....fucking tomatoes drink gallons a day in those bags...
so unless you got a sprinkler or like watering plants, i'd consider something else.

and i'd go at least 7 gallon, the smaller the faster they dry out

I need to let out and feed the ducks and chickens anyway.

if you want to be able to move them, keep them on big saucers or on cement, if you let them set on the ground very long, they'll root through the bags

I use polypropylene reusable shopping bags for $1 each in the garden. There's 12L ones and 35L. UV damages the shit out of them so I throw out after (its breaks apart if you pull it) I use coco and daily waterings

I have used the reusable shopping bags. Walmart, Tractor Supply Co, etc, etc. About a buck or two each. They only last one season though.

I do my tomatoes in my redneck rain-gutter grow system. Basically a trough lined with black plastic about 1-2 inches deep in water all the time. Here is a picture from last year, when I was using buckets.

I bough two float valves from Tractor supply, last spring, but damn if I can find either of them.

So here goes. I started from seed - some tomatoes, peppers, garlic, onions, and some herbs. I'm using a soil called Heritage. We'll see. Above ground garden this year in 10 gallon pots. It was raining yesterday so I transplanted into the 10 gallons and put them on the trailer under the carport for today. Total of 14 pots.




The elephant garlic are huge. When I broke it apart, I thought there would be 8-10 cloves. Nope just 5. lol That is one clove in my hand. doh.

same here, tonight and monday night are supposed to be shitty, possible snow monday night, then tuesday is supposed to be in the 60s.
everything gets put out tuesday, if we get another cold snap, i'll deal with it.

This season I'm doing backyard hydro heirloom Brandywine tomatoes in RDWC.

It's an alternative to growing in the ground where many veggies grew and it's rather depleted.

Any tips for me? I imagine water temp will be an issue, I'll have h2o2 handy.

You might have to water those 10 gallons daily once the plants are large. I water at dawn or dusk.

Regarding the 10 gals.

I’m in CA and the weather is starting to hit the mid 80s. Watering every day and a half or so. Getting close to every day.

I ask because I've watched quite a few youtube videos and it seems tomatoes thrive in a hempy system outdoors.

I'd like to do hempy tomatoes, just not sure if I'll take the plunge this year.

know it's a little hard to see, but there are 6 3/8th inch holes 4 inches up each bucket, got the idea from @too larry who was doing the same thing in a trough on the ground. this pic is 2 weeks old, they're growin like hell now that the weather finally warmed up

What I'm doing is near to hemp bucket style.. I'm not very familiar with hemp buckets

Top bucket 2 gal square with holes and grow stone. Instead of perlite

Bottom bucket 4 gal square with water. Instead of saucer.

Ok, sounds like it's in that similar style.

If you have some time, check out mhpgardener on YouTube. He has a few videos on his hempy tomatoes, and the guy grows some beastly plants. He suckers them for single stem and ties them vertical, his plants get like 12'+. Lots of helpful ideas on YouTube in general, and you can actually see what's going on vs. reading, which I find more helpful.
