Plant problem need assistance

Hello everyone
Need a little quick help.
Ebb and flow system with coco and hydroton.
Ph between 5.8 -6.2

To dive in, I know I'm having a water problem but unsure what it is. When filling the Rez 50 gal with tab water. Day 1 very clear, day 2 cloud Rez foul smell. Unsure Why Rez gets cloud with bad smell. Looking into a hos filter maybe help kill the chlorine.

Plants current have black area and are killing lower levels.

Any suggestions!?

I am a soil guy but lets get more info here. Straight tap water no nutes or other additives? Is there light getting into your res? Did you clean all your equipment including media? What's your cycle time?

Did you flush your Coco before using it? If not I'm willing to bet it's coming from that.

On a second note - If you are having bacteria in your res, getting rid of chlorine won't fix it. It's bad in organics because it messes with the beneficial micro life but in hydro unless you're going full organics it's not harmful. It's actually an essential nutrient to the plant.

Sorry about that was a little rushed at the time of post.
Now I am on computer and not on phone and have time to actually go into detail.

The water was straight tap water from shower -> Bucket -> pumped into Rez
At first all I did was correct PH of water no notes added. Two days later the water was very milky looking cloudy and had a very awful smell. I wouldn't consider a lot of like getting into Rez, Rez does sit under flood tray and is White but I dont think it is cause by light (not like green algae). So to answer that question Yes lights does get into Rez; slightly. Cycle time is 10mins on 2 hrs off.
No root rot, root are white and beautiful.
Stoned Monkey sadly to say I didn't clean everything perfectly I did a quick wash honestly, it is so hard cleaning a 50 gal Rez in the Tub, unfortunately dont have a place outside to clean it but I did go back and relearn it with soap (dishwashing liquid ) and water and really really cleaned it down this time. As for the hydroton I wash as well with a little bleach and rinsed.

As for the Coco it was given to me when I bought the clones, so I didn't wash it but the problem happened before the coco.

Where there is moisture there is bacteria unless something is added to kill it. Chlorine evaporates so once it's gone the bacteria will begin to thrive. You need to keep your station sterilized and filtered to combat this or add something to your res like h2o2.

Second you don't want any light getting into your res.

you can run sterile with hydrogen peroxide or chlorine, usually in the form of pool shock.
or you can use something like hydroguard, which is a benefical organism that out competes harmful bacteria and microbes, starving them out.
i prefer a sterile res, i use 3 ml of 29% hydrogen peroxide per gallon, and freshen it up every 3 days

Sterile is working good PH has finally stabilized.
I got the water tested, and water came back good so it just might have been something in the hydroton or Rez or Pots. I will be doing a double wash once I clean other Rez and tray on hand.
Thank you for the information.
