When to move to the big light

This is my second attempt at my first grow. They sprouted yesterday and are growing but right now only under a desk lamp :(. I have a 400watt hps, I'm just not sure when to put them under. And if not for a while is there some solution without buying another light I am a college student growing in a dorm, and kind of short on money.

Also if these plants grew when would you assume (I know you cant know exactly) they'll be ready to harvest.

Thanks

you can put it under that hps. would probly be better than ur desk lamp.

you can go buy some CFL's (the spiral energy saving ones)

Why my first attempt at my first grow went wrong was because I put my sprouts under the hps and fried them lol. I should have known better. I have done shit-tons of reading but it means nothing without experience. I am really devoted however, and was hoping for a technique of how to get these girls some adequate light.

stays relevant.
Wait until they are ready to be flowered before you put them under the HPS... No use waste an HPS lamp on vegging. Get CFLs for now.

I heard HPS are ok for vegging. MH are probably better but I got to use what I've got. Can I get CFLs at walmart and whats the cost. Any other solutions appreciated.

Yeah, get a good CFL, even a 13Watt just for it to sprout and start growth... It'll cost you about 10$ or so for 2. I'm doing it in my off campus apartment too, so im on a low budget too.

Props to the whole growing while in res :p.. Goodluck not getting caught lol.

Althoug maybe i should be the voice of reason. I hate that. Patience, man. Growing has gotten me more wired than speed with the excitment of making the plants work, but busted u got a 90 percent of being and at a college that is some serious shit! I say wait, get loaded and just proudly keep all this knowledge in your head

You CAN veg and flower using only a HPS light. Works fine, so does CFL to veg and probably more economical for now. Put a Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) in your desk lamp, preferably a 35 watt or higher. Keep the light about 2 inches from top of plant. When plant gets growing and has to be transplanted to a larger pot then its time to go with the HPS.

I go to a pretty small school and everything is pretty relaxed here (it's an environmentally based hippie school :)). I just asked my friend to let me borrow a Fluorescent little grow light from our greenhouse, so I think that should work out. Oh, and we have no dogs and anything like that, and I figure during flowering if smell gets to bad it can be moved.
This is a random side note but I realize how many people grow, and why is it that in my 6-7 years of buying from many people i have never met one. Are there mostly only self sustaining growers, i know me if my grow is successful i plan on giving what ever i can free to some friends who will hopefully pass some on. Why doesnt everyone do this? :D
Happy growing! and thanks for the help any suggestions on how to keep down stick or considerations for ways to grow in a dorm are more than welcome.

yea, it was high enough not to cause damage but low enough not to cause stretching.

smell isn't really a problem with me yet but i use incense if i'm smoking. i heard that smoke is bad for the plants though, causes them to block up.

Good growers NEVER tell ANYONE that they grow.

most of my plants have grown at varying speeds.

i can't measure the distance right now they're sleeping.

i'll try find a picture to demonstrate.

it doesn't help much but here's a picture
