New England is pretty safe as far as hurricanes go. They usually hit somewhere else, and the recent ones that hit haven't been that bad.
But we are due for another 1932 at some point. There won't be much left of long island if another one like that hits. It's basically a sideways florida. One long strip of sand and dirt right around sea level.
If jose threatens, I'll have to pull the boat and put it on land. It would be safer in the water but the marina is more worried about their docks than the boats. The risk is that a storm surge will flood the lot and the boats will all float up and get washed out.
My house is well inland and up at around 300 feet, so all I have to worry about is wind and falling trees along with power failures.
Disaster wise, we are pretty boring. We are overdue for a large earthquake, but otherwise we don't get fires, major floods, or disastrous storms. We get an occassional tornado, but nothing like the midwest or texas. And no mudslides.
In that respect, boring is good. Though our number will eventually come due.......
