Purchasing a good soil for a beginner is very important. Many choices out there. Opinions vary, I recommend fox farm soils to new growers for a couple of reasons and it will be available to you in CA. They have a good soil to start seedlings called Light Warrior. Don't start seedlings in their other soils, they are not as good for seedlings. One bag of light warrior will last a long time.A good style of growing is to start the seedling in something like Light warrior, then 5- 7 days after it peeks from the soil move it into a larger container with something like fox farm ocean forest. If you use ffof it needs no fertilizer for at least 30 days. Another advantage is if you run into problems, there are a lot of people here who have experience successfully growing with it, especially indoors.
I'm just going to start fresh
I like keeping plants alive, if that plant is to be in a container, inside or outside, a 2 or 3 gallon pot would be a better size pot for it to be able to water it evenly.
