seedlings under HPS

just wanted to know if anyone here has ever tried putting seedlings (still with cotyledon leaves) under a HPS 600w.


THEY ARE ABOUT 4 1/2 FEET from the light, and the temp at the highest point seems ok.

I cant see them burning or drying out, or getting to little light...

so what do you guys think?

oh and it's in potting mix, soil grow.

before you comment on whats wrong with my grow box...

Yes I know there are a million things wrong with it, but it's only temporary (a few weeks) untill I get a contractor in to do all my new wiring and fake wall in my garage.

I plan on having somthing ALOT better.

well they just went into their sleep cycle so they're safe for at least 8 hours.

They will be ok under the hps, but a mh is better for veg. Your light is pretty high so your plants may tend to get streched out. Better to get some fans or an exhaust set up on your hood and lower your light to about 2 feet above the plants. I use a 1000wt mh for veg and a 1000wt hps for flower,the trick is to keep the lights 1 to 2 feet off the plants and still keep the temps down. By the way i think 8 hours is a little to long better to go 18/6.

I'll stick my nose in here. You can use that light for your seedling, but why would you? Because you have to have it so far away from the plants most of the light is kinda wasted. You might want to check out some type of floro lighting. Wait a couple of weeks to fire up that bad boy. Then you'll be able to get the light closer with out stretching the plants, and the money you save will pay for about 1/2 the floros. Two weeks or so later when your ready to start flowering, clone those plants and put them under the floros. They can stay there for a long time if necessary while you get the rest of the operation set up. The light fixtures and full spectrum bulbs in this picture costs $50.00. VV

I know how to grow the normal way, shit I've been doing it for years.

but it's this half assed shit (using the wrong lists) that I have no clue about, thats why I'm asking.

I have no choice about this, I just wanted to know, is it possible?

sounds like the answer is yes.

I'm only doing this because I have just moved, and need to set up 3 new circuits in my house, and a whole new grow room built.

at this stage I can only run this cupboard safely (ie. light problems) I think I should be able to bring the light down a fair bit but not strait away because they are so young.

I would use my 40" fluro's but they don't fit, and I'm not fucking about getting new equipment.

Since there seems to be some reason behind you not wanting to get some flouros... I would say spend $20 and go get two, 2ft. shop lights for your seedlings, they work fine for cheap....

I'm becomming a believer in those CFL's for veg. I've seen MH vs. HPS vs. CFL for veg. Them CFL vegged plants look good.

you didn't read my post, I already HAVE a 40" fluro, but it wont fit (I cant even get a 24inch in there) and CFL's are out because by the time I order one online, and it gets to my door, I'll have finished my NEW grow room which has shelves set up with 40" fluro's!

I just wanted to know if it was going to kill my plants?

not how I should set up a grow room that has to last AT MOST 1 WEEK.

I am aure that the HPS will work. Like wkarma said you may have problems with the plant stretching but I dont see why tey wont be ok. Granted CFLs or Flouros would be best. Just wathc that you dont get the light too close in the first stages as these are the most critical points in your plants life.

If it's only a week your good, but for the future you don't have to order CFL's. You can get them at most hardware stores and retailers. Right in the lightbulb section.

yeah already tried, cant get the right type around my area.

the closest I came to finding the right one was a reptile UVB light but I'd need at LEAST 3-5 and they were $27 each

HPS will work for veg; I run a 400 HPS over my mothers.

MH is preferred for veg as the bluish spectrum will produce shorter internodal lengths.

If you don't need to veg up a large amount of plant material for frequent batches of clones, CFLs are a good option. CFLs can maintain a mother plant in great shape but at a slower growth rate than with HID lights. Good for smaller, lower production ops that may only need fresh cuttings every 4-6 weeks or so. Saves a lot of power, too.

i was thinking about shutting down the mh for the summer, i just dont want skyscrapers in the veg area.
