Stress testing is key, and for me it's not always a cut and dry if it throws bananas toss it. Several varieties worthy of holding onto will wig out when stressed. Nothing wrong with fem seeds, like anything vet your plants before you commit your eggs to those girls through stress testing.

If using real STS at the proper ratio, only 2 applications are needed. One application then induce flowering, 2nd app 2 weeks later. The Silver Nitrate and Sodium Thiosulphate chems do not go bad unless they get wet. STS will stay good for 2 years if kept refrigerated...but you already knew that, right!
