2 x 1000w 400v de hps In a 1.2 x 2.4 x 2 tent??? Anybody tried this?

As the title says i'm looking at upgrading my lights to some double ended 1000w 400v lights from 2 x 600w but growing in the confides of a 1.2m x 2.4m x 2m tent!!!! I was hoping someone may have tried this before with success?

I'm thinking maybe 8 to 10 inch extraction with 5 inch intake and i already use a 20 inch metal fan for good indirect air movement and temps in the tent are pretty stable throughout the tent with the 2 x 600w running with only a 5 inch extraction.
Ballast is dimmable down to 600w with a super lume type setting of 1200w.(omega 1000w 400v ballast)

Do de bulbs run hotter than se bulbs of equivalent wattage?
Is the spectrum much better?

youre in the LED section and thats what just about everybody over here would recommend over HPS at this point

energy efficiency is measured in umol/J

your old SE HPS are about 1.2-1.3 umol/J with a typical bulb over its lifespan
DE HPS is about the same spectrum as your SE HPS and is about 1.6-1.7 umol/J over its lifetime

for the same cost as hps you could build an LED system that would operate at 1.8-1.9 umol/J with better spectrum than your HPS, and reduce your electrical use by 20%+

spend a little more on the LEDs and you can have a build over 2 umol/J that can cut your electric bill by up to 40%, you get that extra money back in the first year and not ever have to buy bulbs again

but to answer your question (2) 1000DE hps would fit your tent, it would be on the upper end of light. you could get the same results with 1500-1600W of LED (vs your HPS which would be 2200W+ at the wall)

yous also cut your AC bill (if you use it) by 25% or more

led scares the shit out of me as i have never used it and to be honest is very expensive compared to the lights im looking at £175 with ballast reflector and a dual spec bulb.

Can you recommend a LED setup in this price range which will be as good or better in performance than the 1000w de setup?
I do not mind paying extra in electric if the results are good as an oz sold in today's market more than pays for the electric.
I think for me the way LED Really trumps hid is heat? how hot do these leds get? they must be much cooler?

I dont use ac as i would only need it for a few weeks of the year here in the uk summers are well.... SHIT! ha
I would usually just dim the lights on the hotter days. How much do think 1500w -1600w of led lighting to cover my size tent would cost?

yes those are garbage
what kind of price would a diy setup be, i have qualifications in soldering and i'm currently a product design manager designing electronic packaging. so diy wouldn't be an issue i could design it in 3d cad(Autodesk inventor) and the machine the parts myself. what kind of cobs would you recommend?

i can also buy all the electronic parts at trade prices so this may be a real option for me i think over the hps. it all depends of part costs ie leds?

you dont need to solder. literally the hardest part of the project is cutting and drilling aluminum angle, you sound way above that. heres a sample partslist and some closeups of a build. the "9-engine" screenshot is made up of preassembled heatsinks/chips/holders,which are only a few bucks more but saves assembly. sounds like you may be international since you described your tent in meters. i could ship you all the chips/holders/small parts for about $32. if you wanted me to supply drivers and heatsinks shipping can get up to $80-$100US. if youre international you may want to try to find drivers and heatsinks locally. the "9cob" screenshot shows the chips heatsinks and holders separately, drivers have gone up in price since then

heres what a build looks like

Seems simple enough and I'm in the UK so your spot on. I will go though the part lists when I return to work and let you know if I can get all parts here.
I would love to get into the manufacture of these.
At the min our main business is custom computer enclosures like mil spec and bellow decks spec systems but it's all electronic boxes basically and even sell the fans.
everything we manufacture is made from Aluminium and stainless so sound like I've got a lot of the materials.

Thanks for all the info and like I said will be interesting to see what kind of kit I can get hold of over here. China may be a supply option.

Speak soon and thanks again.

I'd stick with HPS unless you are looking to downgrade your yield and cost yourself a ton of money. LED's suck, they don't compete with HPS for weight unless you are willing to invest 10x more than you would need to, the next thing these LED fanboys will say is electric costs and unless your electric is higher than all hell you will never recover the electric costs unless you plan to run 24/7 for 10 years.

I'd recommend DE lights all day if you got the height and air conditioning to handle the heat and light intensity.

10x more would be $3500-4500 which isn't true. It's $1100-1200 for DIY that will break even with a 1000DE over a 5 year period. I can break it down if someone would like.

And then you can factor in the cooling cost.

A good retail LED lamp will generally beat the SE bulbs and get close to parity with DE over 5 years if you buy the right ones.

Thanks for the reply I've been using the old 600w hps we for about 15 years so I feel I really know how to use them, being in the UK my biggest issues is stealth and with these his lights growing in a tent heat also poses a problem.
Now my thinking with the 1000w de lights is they are adjustable down to 600w (spectrum and bulb life not affected by this like se) so on hot days I would just lower the wattage and on cool days crank it up.
I do think led are the future but cost is still an issue. I may set another tent up for veg and use the led in that or just run right through veg and flower to see how it compares in quality?

Does the led option produce nicer tasting buds?
I know genetics play the main roll here but I do believe light has an impact on taste.

Bud quality is the same, the main factor of bud quality is genetics, good luck and happy growing, those DE lights work really good, i'd adjust them like you said if the heat is an issue.
