After every grow, contaminated or not. Wash the jars in hot water and bleach. Just like kitchen dishes. You can clean the tops and rings too. Or buy new tops.

You're suppose to be wiping the inside of the jars with alcohol / dried before filling. Then another wipe on the rim before topping off with vermiculite.

I have jars that are about 7 years old. I have tops just as old. The punched holes are rusty.
