I went thru the tunnel tree when I was like 5.. Still remember that rare vacation...We lost the Tunnel Tree that last year. So many people reading this
went through that tree in a car. It was one of the Sequoias. Well this
last wet winter, a "La Nina" of all things, had a couple of really bad blows.
Hoping for better news.
We just went thru this with my mother in law. She didn't have very many assets, but it has made me wonder how many assets get seized...the number is probably staggering. I would hate to think that I worked all my life for my property and it ends up with them instead of my family. If hubby or I find ourselves in that position, we will probably make our move to Costa Rica where care is affordable.Jeez, I dunno why i started reading about this but it will probably affect all of us in some way sooner or later.
Make sure you are aware of and have at least an understanding of the rights (and the 5 year look back rule) that Medicaid has in asset seizure and spend down as they relate to nursing home debts you or your spouse might incur. Although this is mostly for those that will check in but never out, it could also apply if you had an extended stay (that was not covered/time limit reached, for both Medicare and private insurance) in a nursing home for an injury/rehabilitation. I doubt many of us could readily afford the $80K yearly average cost of a nursing home stay.
Reason I brought this up, there are ways to protect your assets from seizure but they have to be implemented prior (hence the 5 year rule) to admission.
The Medicaid Estate Recovery Program (MERP) is also intertwined with individual state(s) laws. I couldn't find anything on the amounts seized in a quick search (and you're right, it probably is staggering and a bad "optic").We just went thru this with my mother in law.
