I've been trying to find a spot that I could move away to and live off the land, but they seem few and far between. There is cheap desert land in west texas, but most of it isn't farmable. I want to be off the grid and live off my own sweat and blood, but for the life of me, I can't even figure out how. My credit sucks so I can't get a loan to buy land. The only solution seems to be to work until I can save up enough money.

Computer programmer. Web design, dynamic online applications, search engine optimization. I been doing this for over a year now self employed since the Subprime/OptionARM deal took a dump (I was working secondary marketing at a small bank in Long Beach) (And let me tell you, subprime is HALF the problem, read about Option ARMs), but been programming since Jr high. I tend to run out of cash pretty regularly. It's not that I can't find work, thats easy. I'd just rather work on my websites. Because of that, now im growing. In 2009 im going to have a giant harvest, buy or start a small hosting company and start dumping everything I can afford into advertising. Once that can pay my way in Amsterdam, and I have some decent reserves im going to take my first trip to Amsterdam and see If I wanna live there.

Like, Rocks, Minerals and Jewelery. I started picking up rocks a long time ago, figured I could make some $ off it, so I started a lil business, mostly goto shows over a weekend and sell, and a lil over the net.

I don't think so - We should all live in a town called Weed in Trees County. Everyone would be a farmer or produce something. No money, No cars(we would be too high to drive), No wars, etc. - Nothing but the natural way.

I'm game. You can actually get a mortgage on the land. Total rent would be about $550 a month for the next 30 years or so. We could start out as a tent community and begin installing solar panels and working on irrigation. I actually have access to thousands of free solar panels. The idea is totally doable in theory. I also have plans for desert houses built directly into the earth. http://www.dreamgreenhomes.com/
They stay very cool and provide great homes. The desert is very livable if you have a close water source and there is a few plots left connected to various rivers. As far as an immediate food source until crops grow, we'd have the choice of squirrels, snakes, deers, and various other vegitation, but we would most likely have to have large stocks of food and water for emergencies.

Montana, huh? I never really though of that. Are you living off the land vette? I'd love to hear about your lifestyle.
I am down to go live off the land somewhere too, and I think a lot of people are. You mean live as much as you can without money right? Thats what I am talking about... its doable.... get enough intelligent and cooperative people together and it can happen...

Inneedofbuds have you ever heard about the Earthships that Michael Reynolds designed. They are ideally what I would like to build. Quite interesting that Montana was brought up...I have been debating going there for a long time. Upstate NY near the mountains would be my other choice, but I'm sure winters can be harsh there. A house made out of Hemp would be amazing. If you guys get a chance check into a film called Garbage Warrior - very inspiring stuff.
