Once the buds are dry bag them up for a few hours. When you open the bag take a sniff. If it smells moldy then ya know. You can also taste the mold when smoked. In the old days (70's) I know some people that liked the taste. Not me. I know of no way to "save" the buds.

good luck

Mold begats more mold, so hopefully you were able to separate out all the moldy buds and only jar the clean buds. If you open a jar and it smells musty or mildewy, you're passed the point of smokeable buds.

If you don't have any serious respiratory illnesses or a compromised immune system it'll be fine.

Back in the early 70s we used to moisten pot and bury it for a week in the mistaken belief that the mould made it stronger. Nobody I knew ever suffered from smoking it and there was a lot of us.

People are blowing themselves up trying to make oil through use of solvents. If you use hot iron to press rosin no chance of explosion! That or make some bubble hash.

All the spores will be in the bubble hash. Solvent based extraction with filters finer than coffee filters would be needed to exclude the spores.

Best to cut out all the rotten bits and make the pot into edibles tho that can be hazardous too for some.

Bummer.

Soooo..... In hindsight. If somebody is running a strain thats prone to mold.... What are some preventative measures to consider during the grow season?

I would think heavy lollypopping/apple tree & not overwatering would be a start.

Thoughts?

All strains can get mold or powder mildew , bugs and god knows what else.
It's the CONDITIONS of the grow that lead to it. Indoor has a slight edge of control compared to outdoors. You can raise or lower ambient RH and temps .

Where as outside , if they get soaked by rain or overwatering or some other reason.
It starts with the enviroment of the grow ... If it is optimal for mold growth it will happen.
Good air flow , balanced humidity range for the stage your in.
Good temps and not crowding your plants.
And ESPECIALLY NEVER spray anything on the flowers. ( inner bud areas may not dry off ).

Overwatering doesn't cause bud rot but spraying anything on buds can. I don't grow outdoors but it can happen indoors too if RH is too high and there is poor air circulation. Things that I control to a pretty fine degree. In our very dry climate in the winter high RH is never a problem. Low RH often is tho and during flowering is more than welcome. While vegging I use a humidifier that creates a mist so it's very low power and doesn't add heat to the room. Actually cools the room a bit. Low RH during veg has it's own issues so a nice 50 - 70% is just right.

Outdoors you are at the mercy of the weather and if in rainy areas about all you can do is cover the plants to keep the rain off tho on the west coast fog will penetrate any cover and the buds can be as moist as if they were out in the rain.

It's a lot more of a gamble outside so best of luck.
