Shoppers Drug Mart has officially applied to enter the medical marijuana business.

The Canadian pharmacy and retail behemoth has applied for licensed producer status with Health Canada, a company spokesperson confirmed to iPolitics. If approved, Shoppers could distribute medical pot to Canadians with a prescription at its more than 1,300 stores across the country.

"We have no intention of producing medical marijuana but we do want the ability to dispense medical marijuana to our patients in conjunction with counselling from a pharmacist and we are hopeful that the Government of Canada will embrace that opportunity for enhanced patient care," Shoppers spokesperson Tammy Smitham said in an email statement to iPolitics.

The application is now before Health Canada, and the amount of time it takes for approval varies. The department has so far issued 36 licenses.

If given the green light, Shoppers represents the first major competition to the hundreds of storefront dispensaries that have popped up across Canada, in a legal grey zone, especially in major cities like Toronto and Vancouver.

Earlier this year, Shoppers acknowledged it was exploring the possibility of entering into the pot business.

It is the first retail chain to put in a formal application.

Shoppers' biggest competitor, Rexall, has said it is not exploring the possibility of entering into medical pot distribution at this time.

How does another set of hands expecting profit help patients in any way?
They aren't looking to produce so they want to be a shwag mark up middle man for shitty lp product that no one wants or can afford now!

All the black market street dealers can officially breath a sigh of relief.
As long as this type of thinking continues you mofos got lots of job security.

Shoppers have always been on board. I was working with them in 2013, on plans to supply them when the 1st hint of dispensing from a pharmacy was mentioned in the 1st mmar ramblings. The collage of pharmacies was the one that didn't want to dispence. Shoppers got as far as packaging and supply chain, but got shot down by HC.

And the BM lives on. These non culture idiots are gonna have their asses handed to them. They just don't get it and it's evidenced by their stupid talk. The greed is doing the thinking.
Non of these morons understand that the culture already has weed. They don't get that the very folks they want to sell to are the very folks they are trying to fuck over.....duh !!!

i also think they think they're the cannabis saviors but we already have ours and have been living and worshiping for many years.
i do think it's funny that we have been using it for decades but now they come along and know more than we do. they've never smoked or used t but somehow they're an authority and know more than we do.
somehow because they work for the Government they know it all.......i would like someone making the rules to at least be a rec user so they know better than reefer madness

I have to admit I'm on the fence about this one.

On one hand I hate people profiteering off medical cannabis.

On the other hand, if this makes cannabis a viable option for one more sick person im elated. I suspect there is a large segment of people who won't accept a medicine unless it's prescribed by their doctor and picked up in their pharmacy - this would fill this role.

Regardless this better not impede on a patients right to access nor provide for themself.

thank god these big companies and corporations are coming in to make this product safe
..i mean; it's killed, like..

oh wait.

but yeah, what the hell are they planning on selling if they aint growing it?

i don't care if they're allowed, just as long as everyone else is too. -fair open market - good for the goose - strong survive.. and all that

i just really hope we convert more greedbags to good folks with this plant, instead of them all perverting it/us. cause pot smokers are the best folk. *why i think we should figure out some seal for the people/companies who've been for marijuana since before it became the new popular/dirtbag trend.

Retailing bud is gonna be a big surprise for these idiots. Who's gonna take their returns back....and there will be returns on stales and broken unsellable product. I know how retail works very well. And returns is one of the biggest issues in the perishable market place.
I could explain on and on why it will be a real problem...but I'm too lazy.

I found this in another article about shoppers....

Michael Lickver, a Toronto lawyer at Bennett Jones who advises on the medical marijuana regime, says it’s not surprising that Shoppers applied. He said the market is sizable and demand is growing quicker than anyone had predicted – including Health Canada.

Hmmmm......Bennett Jones is popping up again.....
