Heat is a limiting factor. High pressure sodium are the biguest culprits. The temp at your canopy should be between 73-78°. Also, have you noticed less frost on the tops, under hps? The heat causes the plant to use it's resins as a defense against the heat. Hence the smell you probably have, even with a filter.
Try backing the light off some. I have a 1,000 watt 36" away from the canopy, and have better bud now, than when I ran it at 24". The lighting industry won't tell you, but the footprint of big lights isn't just what they say. Question it.
When you reach temps in the 80's, you risk hurting your plants. Transpiration is necessary for growth, and this stops in excess heat. Do you vent your scrubbed, hot air?
Also monitor temp under the canopy, make sure air circulates down there.

I try to stay under 80 but sometimes I get up to 85 in the summer. Like someone mentioned in a previous post, buds might be fluffy, foxtailing on some strains. It won't kill em but it's not optimal get above 90 or p5 they will just sit there

I am growing The Black strain in a 4x4x7 Gorilla tent...600 watt HPS in a cool tube about 10 inches above the top of my tallest plant...
2 small fans, one oscillating fan, and a can fan for the cool tube and ducting.
Also running a dehumidifier at 55% rh. Lights on Temps are about 72* lights out 65*-68* tent is in my garage.
These are the top two colas on one of my two plants at 39 days....I started counting flowering days when pistols showed after the flip.

I think the cooler temps will develop denser buds and too much heat will.develop fluffier buds and your leaves will start to curl/canoe.
Keep air moving and humidity down especially lights out.
Also definitely veg under 18/6. I use a 6 light T5 for veg hung about 6-8 inches above the tops...
