Thank you for all this info, I'll definitely look it to it. That is really dumb the pH pen doesn't read ppm below 100, that makes no sense! I hope the combo does. My tap water is usually below 100ppm and I like to know exactly what is going on. I was also thinking about the pen type meters but will stay away from the bluelab pen now. I currently use a hanna combo constant reading meter and have used them for a long time and they've been great.. But recently I've just been having lots of wierd issues and can't trust the meter in my veg room now so I've heard lots of good things here and there over the years about blulab, but never had bought one. I did buy the one above because I'm in dire need for a meter because I've literally been winging it in my veg room for 5 days now, I hate not knowing if it's wrong or right and it's a pain in the ass to bring out my veg room water to the flower room to double check if its right.. I really hope this Blulab works wellI have not used that meter but because I'm a hydro newbie I bought the bluelab combo pen pack that comes with a ph and ppm pen (which the above meter u posted is a benze compared to the ones I bought as 88 Hyundai excel) but for some reason my ppm pen won't measure water without nutes in it... I went on their website n it said something about plain water not having enough ??? whatever in it to get a reading but basically it doesn't read less than 100ppms which I'm hating because I have an RO maker that adds back ca/mg and I can't tell what the level is as well as it helps to tell u when your RO membrane needs changing... but that and even with my tap water it still reads 0 (000 actually)... and this is the second blue lab pen I bought that did the same thing to me a few years back but in the description it said it "reads from 0 to ???? ppm" so figuring the first meter I had was effed up in some manner, I bought another... however the ph pen that came in the kit, so far I got zero complaints about it...
This is not to say the one above has anything remotely to compare about the ones I have aside from the brand... but just something to ask about because even the pos Hanna ppm pens, even the one that comes in the box with the "zero water filter" for drinking water reads the waters ppm/ec... so I've been puzzled why the blue lab won't... they had an explanation but it doesn't make sense when other brands of the same quality/price read plain water/below 100ppm... I was always under the impression blue lab was a good brand... but I am using the pens which are shit compared to the one your looking at but just keep the water question in mind before u buy... other than that I'd say it's a fine ass meter but always remember the tv/vcr/DVD combos when you buy combination anything, if one part fails you loose the whole unit... which is why I bought separate meters but that is a constant reader so again it's something I have no experience with... but u get what u pay for in this game, but check around u may find something better... the one reason I couldn't use it is because I have multiple resiviors so I'd only be able to keep track of 1... so this is why the pens/portable units suit me better...
I use a guardian. Love it. Zero issues. If anyone has a Blulab guardian combo meter, please post your experience with it. All negatives and positives. Are you happy with the meter? Is it accurate? Etc.
This is the meter I mostly want info about, but any Blulab combo meter that is constant reading is valuable. Thanks!

This is great to hear my man. How long have you had it? I'd be really stoked to hear if it's over a year with no issues. I just want something I don't have to worry about for a while is all. My hanna combos are good usually but after many problems all at once with one of them, and changing probes every 6 months or so, I'm kind of over them. I figured maybe the technology now compared to my older combo meter could be goodI use a guardian. Love it. Zero issues.
Damn man that's tough, I hate bs descriptions for products, then when you get them it's different, that sucks man. I been back and forth in soil, too, but been doing hydro for the past 7 or 8 years or so. I had the Milwaukees too, the cheap pH pen, the yellow Milwaukee, with the black cap, wasn't too bad for the money a long time ago. I feel all the products now are made to break! Or they don't work right, it pisses me off! 10 years ago, my first pH meter was like 15$. The thing was always dead on and every time I calibrated it, it was right. It's like now, nothing works straight out of the box. I just bought a 200$ environmental digital controller made by autopilot.. A week ago.. Fucking a dude, I went out to the flower room at it was fucking 88% humidity! Fucking thing froze and none of my equipment was turning on! One week old smh. I can't keep having those kind if issues since growing is pretty much my life. I'm not like a commercial grower but I need the best meds I can grow for others and myself and if equipment fails, it fucks everyone.I hear u dude... I specifically went outta my way and saw somewhere in the description that the ppm meter read from 0 to 2000 or 3000, maybe higher but all I cared about was from zero up... then I get it and it's literally the same pen I had prior to starting hydro (don't use a ppm pen often in water only soil...) and I was on a bit of a budget and thought the same as u about blue lab being decent quality so I grabbed the 2 pen set (ph and ppm)... but the one your looking at is much higher end so you should be good... I ran a Milwaukee combo meter for a few years that I paid like $309 for but went through $169 probes like socks... so that was when I went the water only soil route.... now I'm back at it with hydro and finding my knowledge from 5-6 years ago isn't so up to par but good luck with it.... let us know what u think after some use... Not right away but I'll be upgrading sooner than later...
A good way to control lights is either commercial timeclock or use the timer to conteol a contactor which is how I do it, same set up for 5 years . All of my equipment is controlled by relays powered by 24 volts so the load is on the relay not the timers/thermostats.Nah man we all see it... I'm a plumber by trade but the grow thing is my only savior, I'm in the same boat...gf has ms... father n second father/uncle have hep c, another father aged friend has cirrhosis and all kinds of other problems, another family friend just diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.... I'm in my late 30's so it's not like I'm a 25 year old kid or something but I'd be in the poor house and crazy if it wasn't for our favorite plant.. I wanna be a commercial grower but the climate just isn't allowing it unless I wanna chance leaving all those sick people for dead with brick week while I'm in jail...
But back to the plumber statement... 10-15 years ago I'd put a 6 year water heater in and it would last another 10-15 years for the most part... now they last 6 years and 1 month almost exactly.... American standard is made in Mexico, and the list goes on.., everything is meant to be disposable now.. tv's... 2-3 years... cars n motorcycles... they want u financing a new one every 2 years... fuck that... but I was literally looking at controllers (light and climate/c02) last night n that doesn't make me feel too good honestly... I don't need it quite yet but soon, but that doesn't get me excited about having to pick that stuff out n plop out a pile of $ I don't really have for shot that works half the time....
No worries about ranting man I know the feeling, about a year ago I had 2 timers malfunction on me... the one for my veg light shut my veg light off and decided to never turn it back on... so all my vegging plants/mothers started flowering and then a week or 2 later the timer on one of the 2 1k lights in my flowering tent decided it was never gonna turn off again and I didn't catch it for a couple days cuz the lights were on, and I had them staggered so one went on and off before the other so I'd see the first light go out n say ok work times over n it's time to close up n let the ladies sleep... little did I know the other 1k was never shutting down... blew a whole 2 light grow that was 4+ weeks into flower... finally I caught on that the plants were all the sudden in veg again... For a week I thought something was up n kept checking the timers, all was good, they were synced up like they were supposed to be, not stuck or set wrong....but that 1 Mechcanical timer was going right by the shut off point n not shutting the light off... that one hurt.... learning experience I guess but very expensive to say the least....
Man that sucks, I've had good luck with the lighting equipment so far, but know of people going through ballasts like crazy. I recommend nanolux lights, they seem to be doing well so far for me. Budley is right, the contacter is the way to go, the timers with a 1000w hps plugged directly in can fail pretty easily and may cause a fire (potentially). Not saying it's guaranteed but it could happen, but with the contacter, there's no worries for that happening. Good vibes for you not running into any issues again, losing a crop 1/2 way through is completely devastatingNah man we all see it... Totally agreed, that's how mine are set up as well. Even for the environment controller, like the dehumidifier is run through a contacter to reduce draw on the controller unit itself. I appreciate the concern but I actually run dedicated 20amp breakers to each of my ballasts on actual grow grade timers but way back when that happened I was running junk timers but I've always ran new dedicated 20ampers to my ballasts with 12-2 on new 200amp services.... luckily nothing happened other than some lost crops though... but I learned my lesson...Man that sucks, I've had good luck with the lighting equipment so far, but know of people going through ballasts like crazy. Sounds like you got it right now brother, good to hear that those shitty timers suck bad! I think we all did the some of that at one point or another in the beginning... I can only imagine the number of growers that got extension cords criss crossing, with dollar store surge protectors loaded to the max on 15amp split breakers or a fused service even... without a fire extinguisher for miles... I don't have a suppression system or anything as it's a bit much for my size grow... I'm a 2 light guy so it's not like I need a sprinkler system or cat generator to power my op if the power goes out or something but definitely keep a few extinguishers close by and keep the surge protectors to a minimum...Don't tell anyone, but I ran those shit timers running 2-3 lights way back lol. Never again after I heard the stories I've heard
Good note! Always keep an extinguisher near by, peace of mind at minimumI think we all did the some of that at one point or another in the beginning... I own both one of these and a handheld combo meter. Both are robust, accurate and solid instruments capable of taking constant daily use for years. Replacement pH probes cost about $60 and will go several years with reasonable care.If anyone has a Blulab guardian combo meter, please post your experience with it. All negatives and positives. I sleep where I grow. Therefore, I do not fuck around with second rate electrical installations. The upfront cost is nothing compared to the consequences of going cheap.I think we all did the some of that at one point or another in the beginning...
