Carbon filters

it's my understanding these filters need annual replacing. I have to assume this means after a year of use, right? Being that I've not started my first grow yet, I'm wondering if I can leave it off during vegging and just add it for flowering. That way I could, in theory double its life expectancy.
Thoughts?

Yip you can do that. I just run mine through veg and flower and they are over a year old. Lots of filters will actually say how long they are good for and you'll know when they need replacing.

Hihi, yes. Obviously when it stops working. What I was getting at is wether or not a filter is needed before flowering thus lengthening it's life.
See, I never been around these type of plants, so I have no idea about the actual plant smell.

the one we have is easily dismantled to replace the activated carbon. works great, and haven't had to change it (6months use) yet. activated carbon isn't very expensive, so that's a great option.

we got our 8'' inline fan and can filter for (if i remember correctly) just over 200$ shipped from jet.com, and i'm very pleased with it. the packaging sucked, but it arrived undamaged and works very well.

depends on the number of plants, humidity, strain, and other factors. if you have a 30x60 foot veg room, you need to think about odor control. if you have one plant in a pc case, i doubt it would be an issue.

Strain is another important factor of course - I'm currently finishing some Critical Mass and smell is negligible, but I've got some Lemon Skunk in my nursery that are already kicking off a stink and they're no where near flowering.

Could be wrong, but I think a filter will become less effective over time whether in use or not since the carbon is "activated"
I bought a Can-Lite about 2 years ago and the wife had just recently mentioned she "may" have caught a whiff from my grow. Life expectancy on the box says up to 2.5 yrs but I've used mine hard & feel I've got my moneys worth if replaced every 2 yrs.
I'm reading up on changing out the carbon in the one I have to save some $$$ vs buying another.

Also if you oversize the fan/can setup it will last a lot longer. Ive got a 550cfm matched fan and phresh filter in a small room. It runs 24/7 except in winter. Its 2.5 years old and smells not at all..

Some are good for longer.

I rebuild and refill mine. I also bake them to refresh the carbon.

Over size the filter and it will last longer. Like a 8 inch filter on 4 inch fan. The only reason they have you match them is to replace them more often.

The larger filter has more surface area so the air moves slower over the carbon and scrubs it better. It is also easier on the fan.

Lots of options - I buy cheap and replace when needed... Currently using a Rhino carbon filter.

Just specing out a carbon filter (going to get it 3D printed with active carbon filter foam from EBay) to plug onto my nursery as that just has a couple of ducted fans for in and out...

So just remove the rivets in the top flange and remove the inner screen and replace the carbon?

I'm going to have fairly low humidity since it's generally fairly dry here. There will be 3, maybe 4 plants in the tent. I got 3 strains. Sour Diesel, Purple Kush and White Widow.

I bought an inline filter that goes before my inline carbon filter. Standard pleated furnace filter. I also have a filter on the intake in the wall on my room. Keep dirt out of your filter!
Mines wrapped in a fleece materials - quite agree though let the carbon filter smell, not everything!
